It may have been expected, but this one hurts.

Notre Dame's current No. 1 target in the defensive secondary - four-star safety Lathan Ransom - announced Tuesday that he has committed to Ohio State.

Ransom and was rated as the No. 4 overall safety in the 2020 class according to 247Sports' composite rankings and landing him would have taken Notre Dame's 2020 recruiting cycle from great to elite.

Ransom made his final decision between Ohio State, Notre Dame and Texas. The Tucson, Ariz. native took an official visit to South Bend in early June, but he then visited Ohio State and Texas soon afterword. At the finals of The Opening, Ransom told reporters the three schools were equal in his mind.

Ransom's commitment to Ohio State still leaves Notre Dame without a safety in the 2020 class and few options on the horizon. Four-star prospect Jerrin Thompson announced his top five schools and Notre Dame made the cut, but he has yet to officially visit to South Bend. Texas product Christian Gonzalez did officially visit in late June, but he isn't close to making a decision yet.

The Irish recruiting board will likely expand as Notre Dame searches for bodies at the position. It's also possible that recent cornerback commit Caleb Offord could shift over to safety, although that likely won't be decided until after the 2020 class gets on campus.

For now, the Irish will have to take solace in the fact that they came very close to landing Ransom, but the search for a safety continues.
