Space Coast Jr./Sr. High has named Matt Martin to fill its head football coach position.

Martin, 40, a former Rockledge player and assistant at Merritt Island and Eau Gallie, comes from the job of athletic director and offensive coordinator at Jasper County High in Monticello, Ga., where he has worked since 2017. He is a native of Riverdale, Ga., but moved to Rockledge at age 9.

Also the strength and conditioning coach while at Merritt Island (2008-12, '13-15), Martin coached defensive line for the Mustangs two years and then offensive line the remainder of his tenure. He was an assistant coach at Eau Gallie from 2005 through 2007.

"He loves football and is well-organized," said Jeff McLean, Merritt Island's athletic director and former head football coach. "He's been a strength coach, coached offense and defense. We hated to see him go when he left."

One of his players, Matthew Beardall, who went on to play at Marshall University following his Mustangs career, said he was "super excited to get him back in Brevard to coach."

"First off, he's a great person," Beardall said. "He loves his kids, loves his family, treats his players like one of his own."

At Rockledge, Martin played defensive tackle and also participated in baseball, golf and track and field.

The 2005 UCF graduate previously coached at Cairo (Ga.) High. The Jasper County offense averaged 358 yards per game last season, and the team's running back was fourth in the state in rushing during the regular season.

Martin follows former Vipers head coach Matt Diesel, who resigned in February and became the Cocoa defensive coordinator. Diesel was 10-10 over two seasons.

The Vipers have made two playoff appearances in their football history: 2008 and 2013.
