Memphis and Houston are back on the schedule

The AAC announced Monday that the game, previously scheduled for Sept. 18, will now be played Dec. 5 at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium. Kickoff time and TV information will be announced later.

The game was postponed after the Tigers paused football activities on Sept. 11 due to a COVID-19 outbreak. The outbreak also forced Memphis to cancel its Sept. 25 game against UTSA.

“Obviously, I’m disappointed the Houston game had to be postponed and rescheduled, but it was for the health and safety of our student-athletes, and they will always be our main concern,” Tigers coach Ryan Silverfield said in a statement. “I’m so excited to be able to play them again at the back end of our schedule. They are a wonderful opponent, and it is going to be awesome to have them come to Memphis and play in the Liberty Bowl.”

While Memphis has only played one game this season, Houston is still waiting to make its debut. The Cougars had four games postponed this season due to their opponents having issues related to COVID-19, including Baylor, which was their makeup game after losing Memphis.

Memphis is scheduled to face SMU on Saturday. while Houston remains off until Oct. 8 when it hosts Tulane.

This also means the AAC Championship Game, which was set for Dec. 5, could be pushed back to accommodate both teams if they remain in contention for the game. Memphis is the defending AAC champion.

In its release, Memphis said that the date for the championship game will be determined no earlier than Nov. 1. An AAC spokesperson confirmed the date.
