Mario Cristobal told players at Oregon he was leaving the school in a team meeting Monday morning, according to a report, and is expected to be announced as the University of Miami coach.

Manny Diaz was fired Monday as the Miami Hurricanes football coach, the school announced, clearing the way to hire Oregon coach Mario Cristobal.

Cristobal told players he was leaving Oregon in a meeting that began at 7:45, according to The Oregonian.

“We are grateful to Coach Diaz for his many contributions to our campus community and to his native South Florida, and for the strong leadership and exemplary character he exhibited during his tenure at the University,” said President Julio Frenk. “We wish him and his family the very best as they move forward.”

Miami’s record in three years under Diaz was 21–15. He went 16-9 in the Atlantic Coast Conference and 0-2 in bowl games. The 2021 season started a disappointing 2-4 before ending with a 7-5 record (5-3 in the ACC).

In its three seasons under Diaz, Miami didn’t win the Coastal Division or play in the ACC title game.

Speculation increased about Diaz’s future after Athletic Director Blake James parted ways on Nov. 15, two days after the Hurricanes lost to in-state rival Florida State for the first time since 2016.

James hired Diaz as UM’s football coach in 2018 as the successor to Mark Richt, who coached the Hurricanes for three seasons before abruptly retiring from coaching on Dec. 30, 2018.

Diaz, who was UM’s defensive coordinator under Richt and had accepted the head coaching job at Temple a month prior, was hired as Miami’s next football coach one day later in a move that James detractors criticized him for due to making a hasty decision and not conducting a national search.
