New Hoosiers women's soccer coach calls IU a 'destination job'

Erwin van Bennekom was named the newest head coach of the Indiana University women's soccer program Tuesday, according to a release. He comes to the Hoosiers after spending the past four seasons as an associated head coach at Duke. 

"Erwin quickly rose to the top of an outstanding pool of candidates, and it was encouraging and exciting to have such interest in this position," IU athletic director Fred Glass said. "Erwin has demonstrated at the highest levels of intercollegiate and international soccer an ability to develop young women into strong leaders academically, athletically and personally."

At Duke was 68-17-11 during van Bennekom's time with the program, including a 13-3-2 NCAA tournament mark. The team advanced to the third round or further in every season.

"This is a tremendous honor. IU is a destination job, and I want to thank Fred Glass and Stephen Harper for the opportunity to join such a prestigious institution," van Bennekom said. "I am very excited to get to work and be a part of the Hoosier family. I want to thank Duke Director of Athletics Dr. White, Deputy Director of Athletics Dr. Kennedy and head women's soccer coach Robbie Church for all their support and guidance over the years. It was a privilege to work with the student-athletes at Duke University. I'm going to make the most of this tremendous opportunity, and make IU and the state of Indiana very proud of the product that we put out on field."

The women's soccer team finished this season 8-8-2, and has not made the NCAA tournament since 2013. van Bennekom replaces Amy Berbary, who spent six seasons as the team's head coach.
