Where is Ohio State football in the Week 14 College Football Playoff rankings?

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State football’s College Football Playoff hopes may still have a heartbeat.

The Buckeyes dropped three spots to No. 5 after losing The Game to Michigan. USC moved up to No. 4, putting it into position to make the semifinals if it beats Utah in the Pac-12 championship game.

If the Trojans lose, OSU is the only option to possibly move up to the fourth and final playoff spot. It is possible the same math applies to No. 3 TCU, though the Horned Frogs are undefeated and play a higher-ranked team — No. 10 Kansas State — in the Big 12 championship game.

Defending national champion Georgia held on to the No. 1 spot. Michigan, having beaten OSU 45-23 last Saturday, took over the Buckeyes’ previous spot at No. 3.

The top three spots were more or less predicted. The question was whether the selection committee would drop OSU past USC, or whether they would leave the Buckeyes higher and wait to see if the Trojans beat Utah in the Pac-12 championship game Friday night.

Ohio State has moved up late in the rankings before. In 2014 it was No. 5 in the penultimate reveal before trouncing Wisconsin 59-0 in the Big Ten championship game. It went into the playoff as the 4 seed and won the national championship.

However, that team had the benefit of enhancing its resume in the conference championship game. That will not be the case this weekend.

Penn State moved up three spots to No. 8, making OSU’s best win look even better. Notre Dame dropped six spots to No. 21. However, that is a resume wash at this point because both the Buckeyes and USC have wins over Notre Dame by 11-point margins.

Some had speculated that two-loss Alabama could sneak ahead of OSU. The committee ranked it one spot behind, though, at No. 6.
