Baker Mayfield caught a lifeline.

The former No. 1 overall pick and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers agreed to terms on a one-year deal worth up to $8.5 million, per ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Mayfield joins his fourth team in three years. The 27-year-old quarterback and the Cleveland Browns split up following the 2021 season, when the Browns traded him to the Carolina Panthers. He spent the first 12 weeks of the 2022 season with the Panthers. After winning just one start, he was placed on waivers and picked up by the Los Angeles Rams, where he finished the 2022 season.

The Buccaneers are looking for a solution to replace the irreplaceable in Tom Brady. Mayfield will likely compete for the starting job with Kyle Trask, who the Buccaneers took with a second-round pick in 2021.

In Mayfield's 10 starts last season, six with the Panthers and four with the Rams, he won just two contests.

In his first game in Los Angeles, however, Mayfield replaced John Wolford to rally the Rams past the Las Vegas Raiders 17-16. In his Rams debut, he completed 22 of 35 passes for 230 yards and one touchdown. Mayfield was up-and-down the rest of the way, starting the next four games and winning one.

Mayfield now looks to revive his career in the NFC South.
