The Bills might be saying they’re close to being settled at cornerback, but Bleacher Report doesn’t think so.

B/R recently pegged each NFL team’s “most important position to address” now that we’re in the grey area between free agency and the 2021 NFL Draft. For Buffalo, the answer was cornerback.

Here’s the reasoning:

The Buffalo Bills re-signed cornerback Levi Wallace this offseason to play opposite Tre’Davious White. The investment in Wallace says a lot about how the organization feels about the position.

The 25-year-old inked a one-year, $1.8 million deal. Basically, he wasn’t offered starter money despite starting 35 games in his first three seasons.

On top of that, the organization didn’t retain veteran Josh Norman.

Technically, the Bills are set at their three cornerback spots, with Taron Johnson working the slot. Johnson could get a shot working outside more often. Even then, the need shifts to nickel corner.

Johnson’s contractual status adds yet another wrinkle since he’s a free agent after this season.

It’s clear that general manager Brandon Beane will look to address cornerback at some point to find a long-term option opposite White.

While B/R does make a decent point on Wallace’s contract, this idea has been no secret. In recent years despite solid play from Wallace, the Bills have decided to bring in competition for him each offseason. In 2020, it was Josh Norman, who’s still a free agent.

Moving forward the real question isn’t actually whether or not Wallace will have some competition. It’s will he only battle Dane Jackson for the job?

Jackson played limited time in 2020 but did impress in five games. However, he’s only a seventh-round rookie.

Buffalo general manager Brandon Beane said Jackson will factor into the cornerback No. 2 battle in training camp… but the question is, will it be a two-way or three-way battle with another addition via the draft?
