Chargers confident in Roderic Teamer filling in at strong safety

The Chargers took a big hit to their defense when safety Adrian Phillips sustained a broken forearm in the Week 2 loss to the Lions. Suddenly, the position that was played by Derwin James became thin.

While Los Angeles had a few notable players that could fill in for the injured Phillips, they decided to go with an option out of left field. The team elected to roll with undrafted free agent Roderic Teamer.

It's an unordinary situation for an undrafted rookie to get the start in Week 3, especially after missing about a month to a hamstring injury, but coach Anthony Lynn felt like he did enough the past few months to earn the job.

"We have a lot of confidence in that young man as well, but he's young and he missed the last couple of weeks, and if for some reason he's not picking it up the way we want him too, then we can make a switch," Lynn said.

Lynn said that he'd make the switch if he feels like the former Tulane product struggles against the Texans, but Teamer is out to fully earn the trust of the coaching staff.

If for some reason Teamer doesn't pan out the way he is hoping, Los Angeles can move Rayshawn Jenkins to strong safety, while Jaylen Watkins or rookie Nasir Adderley fills in for him at free safety.

But Jenkins even believes that this shouldn't be the case, and Teamer will impress in his professional regular season debut.

"I feel he can handle that role very efficient. He has shown us in the preseason that he can do it. I mean he's out there, we expect him to continue to do what he's been doing," Jenkins said, per Orange County Register's Gilbert Manzano.
