Cowboys Re-Signed Running Back On Tuesday Morning
The Dallas Cowboys re-signed a running back to their roster on Tuesday, looking to add depth at the position.
According to his agency Sports Trust Advisors, the Cowboys re-signed running back Rico Dowdle on Tuesday. Dowdle has played sparingly with Dallas since being signed as an undrafted free agent out of South Carolina in 2020.
When healthy, Dowdle has been the team's third string running back behind Ezekiel Elliott and Tony Pollard. With Elliott now out of Dallas, Dowdle looks to have an expanded role if he is able to stay healthy.
To date, Dowdle has appeared in 20 NFL games, rushing for 24 yards and one touchdown.
After Ezekiel Elliott's release and the application of the franchise tag to Tony Pollard, some wondered if the Cowboys would look to the upcoming NFL draft to bring in a younger running back.
The two-back system with Elliott and Pollard worked well for Dallas last season, and bringing in a back with fewer injuries could help the team establish another tandem.
After signing Dowdle, it appears that Dallas is willing to evaluate its options internally at the running back position.
They could still draft another back, but with Pollard and Dowdle signed, it looks like the two veterans will get the lion's share of carries this season.
