Falcons running back Devonta Freeman (knee) will sit out Sunday's game against the Panthers after missing an entire week of practice, coach Dan Quinn told reporters Friday.

In the meantime, the Falcons expect Tevin Coleman to carry the majority of the workload Sunday while rookie fourth-round pick Ito Smith also prepares to take on a more involved role.

“We highly regard (Coleman),” Quinn said Thursday. “We’ve been down this road before, if it gets to that where (Freeman can’t play), Tevin can certainly handle (the load). We’ve done that the other way where Free’s had to (play) when Tevin (couldn’t play). Obviously, we like them both together.”

Freeman suffered the injury when he was hit late in Atlanta's loss to the Eagles last Thursday. He logged six carries for 36 rushing yards while adding 14 receiving yards on three catches in the season-opening defeat.

The Falcons are slated to host the Panthers at 1 p.m. ET Sunday.
