The Patriots need to act quick.

Starting quarterback Mac Jones is dealing with a severe high-ankle sprain, and New England is set to visit a 2-1 Green Bay Packers team on Sunday.

So it’s time for a former New York Giants head coach to step up and do his job.

Joe Judge is the Patriots quarterbacks coach and will now need to get someone ready for the weekend. That someone will likely be either Brian Hoyer or rookie Bailey Zappe.

“Obviously, we always want to play to our player’s strengths. Every player has a unique skill set. Every player does certain things a little better than other things,” Judge told the Boston Herald. “So, we’ll have a plan based on who’s going to be the quarterback, and we’ll see how it develops during the week.

“Obviously, Brian’s done a lot of things in his career that maybe we implement, maybe we don’t. We don’t want to go ahead and completely turn the offense on its head. We feel like we were making some progress. But at the same time, we’re going to make sure we put guys in a position to succeed. There are things we could do different with Brian vs. Mac vs. Bailey. Absolutely for all three of them. But does that mean we’re going to change our identity, what we’re trying to build towards? Not necessarily.”

Judge was an assistant under Bill Belichick from 2012-19, before he became the Giants head coach. He went 6-10 with the Giants in 2020 and then went 4-13 last season, with six straight losses to end the season.
