CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Jacksonville Jaguars are on a six-game losing streak. Now, it appears their starting quarterback is banged up.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Gardner Minshew has multiple thumb fractures, but did not tell the team until after their 39-29 loss to the Chargers on Sunday.

The Jaguars are on their bye, but it’s not clear whether he will be able to play when they host the Texans on Nov. 8.

Minshew has completed 65.9 percent of his passes this season for 1,855 yards, 13 touchdowns and five interceptions. But he will have to prove he can be the long-term answer at quarterback or the Jaguars could be one of the teams in the mix for Trevor Lawrence, Justin Fields or Trey Lance in the 2021 NFL Draft.

That will be tough to do considering the second half of their schedule includes games against the Packers, Steelers, Browns, Titans, Ravens, Bears and Colts. The only two teams the Jaguars play the rest of the season who aren’t in playoff spots right now are the Texans and Vikings.

Giants, Chargers each have a player test positive for COVID-19

On Thursday morning, both the Giants and Chargers announced that they have had a player test positive for COVID-19.

Both teams have kept their facilities open for now despite the positive tests. The Chargers announced they will go virtual for their meetings on Thursday. Jordan Raanan of ESPN reported that Giants guard Will Hernandez will be placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list, and that eight players and two coaches were told to stay home on Thursday.

The Chargers are scheduled to play in Denver vs. the Broncos on Sunday, and the Giants are hosting the Buccaneers on Monday night.

How Derek Carr’s running could help his passing game

The Raiders are a game out of the final playoff spot in the AFC. The play of Derek Carr has been a reason why they are still in the mix despite their poor defense.

He’s completed 72 percent of his passes for 1,726 yards, 13 touchdowns and just two interceptions in six games.

The next step in his development, writes Adam Hill of the Las Vegas Review-Journal, is his improvement as a runner. Carr talked to reporters on Wednesday about how he expects to run more down the stretch, whether it be escaping the pocket or taking off to get first downs and extend drives.

He had just two runs against the Buccaneers but had 19 yards. Both of those runs went for first downs in Las Vegas' 45-20 loss to Tampa Bay.

Julian Edelman out for Patriots vs. Bills

When the struggling Patriots go to Buffalo on Sunday to play the Bills, they won’t have their top receiver.

According to multiple reports including NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Edelman had surgery on his knee, which means he will miss some time starting with the Bills' game.

Edelman has caught 21 passes for 315 yards this season.

Doug Kyed of NESN examined what the rest of the Patriots' receiver depth chart looks like with Edelman out.

Mike McCarthy has lighthearted moment with reporters

It hasn’t been a good first season in Dallas for Mike McCarthy. His Cowboys are 2-5 and might be down to their third-string quarterback in Ben DiNucci.

But his sense of humor still appears to be intact.

He was asked during a Zoom press conference about his team getting off to slow starts. Another person on the call was critical of the question, but his mic wasn’t muted, leading to a hilarious reaction from McCarthy.
