San Francisco 49ers fans have been anxiously awaiting news regarding left tackle Trent Williams' playing status for next season.

Williams, a 12-year NFL veteran, is 34 years old. He'll be 35 when the 49ers' 2023 campaign begins next fall. Last week, Williams openly discussed the possibility of retirement

"It's a long season," he said, according to ProFootballTalk. "And having two long seasons back-to-back, it does get pretty grueling for a 34-year-old guy like myself. I’ll be 35 when the [2023] season starts. You do kind of think about what’s life like after football. I’ve done this every year of my life since the second grade."

Fortunately for those in Niners Nation this Saturday, it appears that Williams isn't ready to call it quits just yet.

According to an article posted this afternoon, the 49ers left tackle won't be retiring and will return to the team next season.

Williams joined San Francisco in 2020 following a 9-year stint in Washington. The longtime Commanders' tackle racked up seven Pro Bowl nominations during his time in D.C. and added three more in his last three seasons with the 49ers.

Per, Williams announced that'd he'd be coming back during Saturday's Pro Bowl Game practices, saying, "Yeah, for sure. Next year, the year after. I'm under contract until I'm 39 [years old]."

The development is certainly positive news for the 49ers, who, frankly, haven't had much go right of late.

San Francisco was knocked out of the postseason in the NFC title game last Sunday, falling to the Super Bowl-bound Eagles 31-7. Even worse, though, the 49ers lost rookie starter Brock Purdy early in that game to a UCL tear. The injury is expected to sideline him for up to six months.

While it's currently unclear who will start at quarterback for the 49ers next season, one thing is certain - whoever is chosen will have one of the best blindside protectors in all of football to his left.
