Marcus Davenport, other San Antonio area products gear up for NFL training camps

Stevens High School and UTSA product Marcus Davenport has high expectations heading into his second year with the New Orleans Saints.

The 14th overall pick in the 2018 draft is in prime position to earn a starting role after Alex Okafor signed with the Kansas City Chiefs in March. This leaves a clear path for Davenport to take over one defensive end spot after posting a strong rookie season. Davenport played in 13 games last season as a key backup on the defensive line, recording 22 tackles and 4.5 sacks.

Davenport is one of several San Antonio area products who getting ready for the start of NFL training camps. Some are vying for starting roles, while others are fighting to make the 53-man roster, or the practice squad itself.

Three Alamo City natives are set to play for the Los Angeles Rams again after reaching the Super Bowl a season ago.

Jay’s Josh Reynolds is in contention for a starting spot at wide receiver after becoming a mainstay starter when Cooper Kupp got injured in the Rams’ run to the Super Bowl. Reynolds caught eight passes for 121 yards in the playoffs last year. Steele’s Malcolm Brown is entering his fifth year in the league and is expected to be a piece of the Rams’ running back rotation behind Todd Gurley. Brown rushed for 212 yards in 2018. Meanwhile, Brackenridge product Ramon Richards continues to work for a spot on the Rams’ 53-man roster as a defensive back and special teams player. He was on the Rams’ practice squad for all of 2018 after signing as an undrafted free agent from Oklahoma State.

Reagan’s Ty Summers, who played at TCU, was chosen by the Green Bay Packers in the seventh round of this year’s NFL draft. He’ll contend for one of the 53 spots at linebacker in his first season in the NFL.

Seguin’s PJ Hall, a defensive tackle, starts his second season with the Oakland Raiders, and many pundits have discussed the Sam Houston State standout’s ability to make a leap in production in 2019 after being taken in the second round of the 2018 draft. He made 16 tackles as a rookie.

Other veterans from San Antonio hope to be contributors across the league.

Safety Andrew Sendejo will put on a different jersey for the first time since 2011 after the Smithson Valley product signed with the Philadelphia Eagles this offseason following eight seasons with the Minnesota Vikings. The Indianapolis Colts hope adding Wagner’s Derrick Kindred can provide depth at safety. The Colts seem keen on his experience as Kindred kicks off his fourth season in the league.

Staying healthy is a priority for Madison graduate Vincent Taylor, who returns from a foot injury in his third year as a defensive tackle with the Miami Dolphins. Taylor played in eight games before being put on the injured reserve list. Taylor’s rookie season also ended with being placed on the injured reserved list with a knee injury after staring in 13 games in 2017.

A pair of former Judson corners are on rosters entering the 2019 season. Tre Flowers could rise the depth chart with the Seattle Seahawks. Flowers had a successful rookie season in his first year playing at corner, recording 55 tackles, six pass break-ups, three forced fumbles and recovered two fumbles. Phillip Gaines battles to make the cut with the Cleveland Browns after being re-signed in March. Entering his sixth season in the NFL, Gaines started in six games for the Buffalo Bills last year before being released in November and picked up by the Browns.

Roosevelt’s Arrion Springs is still on the Los Angeles Chargers practice squad as a cornerback in his second season out of Oregon. Springs spent time on the practice squad of five teams, including the Chargers, in 2018.

Two area products were signed as undrafted free agents in 2019.

Steele’s Antoine Wesley will contend for a spot on the Baltimore Ravens’ roster following his All-American campaign as a wide receiver at Texas Tech. Wesley, who declared early for draft but went unselected, caught 88 passes for 1,410 yards and nine touchdowns in 2019. Former Brennan standout defensive end Derick Roberson was picked up by the Tennessee Titans.
