More than two weeks after Aaron Rodgers declared publicly that he plans to play for the New York Jets next season, the NFL world is still waiting on news of Rodgers' trade to become official.

It sounds like we'll have to keep waiting a while longer.

During an appearance on the Pat McAfee show Friday, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport relayed that the Green Bay Packers and Jets don't appear to be any closer to agreeing on a trade than they were prior to this week's NFL owners' meetings.

"It does sound like (Brian) Gutenkunst and Joe Douglas talked during the league meetings, but I didn't get the sense they got any closer," Rapoport said. "There's still no deadline."

Rapoport noted that, even though the annual owners' meetings puts all of the league's decision-makers in the same place, it's not the type of place where deals typically get done.

That appears to be the case for the Rodgers trade, with the Jets and Packers presumably still butting heads over compensation. Gutekunst, the Green Bay general manager, all but said that the team doesn't need the Jets' No. 13 overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft in return for Rodgers, but Rapoport indicated they will still desire a significant package of picks.

"Even though 13 is probably not available, they can still get really good compensation by putting a bunch of other picks together," he explained.

There have been some reports this week that the current sticking point is trying to figure out conditional compensation — draft picks that could change based on whether Rodgers hits certain benchmarks next season and opts to return in 2024.

Whatever the holdup, it seems counterintuitive that no deal has yet been done even though Rodgers has said he wants to play for the Jets, the Jets clearly want Rodgers and the Packers have publicly turned the page to Jordan Love behind center.

Hopefully we get a resolution soon.
