The Giants are in the midst of their best season in six years, but Sunday they need to beat the surging Washington Commanders to avoid falling into the NFC East basement and possibly out of the NFC playoff picture.

Since starting 6-1, the Giants have lost three out of their last four games, including their last two to the Detroit Lions and Dallas Cowboys. At 7-4, they are in a position to end a five-year playoff drought that dates to 2016. The Giants are hopeful that the return of some of their key players from injuries will be just the cure for what has been ailing them lately.

The Commanders, meanwhile, will attempt to remain one of the hottest teams in the NFL under the guidance of quarterback Taylor Heinicke. Since replacing Carson Wentz as the starter, Heinicke has led the Commanders (7-5) to five wins in six games.

Washington is a two-point favorite.

Here’s how our NJ Advance Media experts see this game unfolding:

Darryl Slater, NFL reporter: Really, the Giants’ playoff hopes come down to their two matchups with the Commanders — this week at home and in two weeks down in Landover, Md. (with the Commanders having a bye in between those two games). The Commanders are hot. They’ve won three straight games and six of their past seven. Meanwhile, the Giants have lost three of their past four. If they don’t get Saquon Barkley going against PFF’s 21st-rated rushing defense this week, they’ll be in big trouble.

Giants 21, Commanders 17

Bob Brookover, Giants beat reporter: The Giants are well rested and healthier than they have been in weeks. They spent much of the practice week working on getting their running game going again after Saquon Barkley was held to 61 yards on 26 carries in the team’s last two games. Barkley heats up in this game and the Giants respond once again in an adverse situation.

PICK: Giants 23, Commanders 19

Andy Vasquez, Jets beat reporter: This game is going to go a long way toward determining the Giants’ playoff chances this season. The Giants have hit their first rough patch of the season with three losses in their last four games and their first consecutive loses of the season. The Commanders have won six of seven, but only one of those games have come against a team over .500. The Giants get back on track with a big day from Saquon Barkley.

PICK: Giants 17, Commanders 13

Chris Franklin, Eagles beat reporter:

As of now, both teams hold a playoff spot in the NFC. However, after this game, the Commanders will be the team that will be in a better position for a coveted playoff spot. The Commanders’ offense has looked a lot better since Taylor Heinicke has taken over as the starting quarterback and he will make just enough plays for a Washington win.

Commanders 20, Giants 14
