N.J.’s Kenny Pickett praised for Steelers’ game-winning TD vs. Colts 11/29/2022 Bridget Hyland,

A big night for Kenny Pickett.

It was the fourth quarter Monday night and the Pittsburgh Steelers were third and goal trailing the Indianapolis Colts, 17-16. Then, Pickett made a call that secured the victory for his team.

According to Pro Football Talk, Pickett made the call - a handoff to Benny Snell for the touchdown - that gave the Steelers the 24-17 win.

Pickett completed 20 of 28 passes Monday for 174 yards as the Steelers improved to 4-7.

“That run we scored on, Kenny called it. We were in the timeout, and Kenny said, ‘I want to run this,’” enter Mason Cole said, via Pro Football Talk. “To see that confidence, on third-and-2 on the goal line, is big. It’s good to see, it’s exciting to see. It really showed who he is as a leader, the command he has on the field.”

Pickett, the No. 20 pick overall in the 2022 NFL Draft, essentially took over as starter after Mitch Trubisky was benched at the half against the New York Jets on Oct. 2.

The Oakhurst, N.J. native who starred at Ocean Township High School finished third in voting for the 2021 Heisman Trophy Award. He was the first New Jersey native to be a finalist for the Heisman since former Michigan star and ex-New York Giants defensive back Jabrill Peppers in 2016. Pickett had been hoping to be the fourth N.J. high school football product to earn the Heisman Trophy and the first since 1999, when it went to Overbrook product Ron Dayne, a running back at Wisconsin who went on to a career with the Giants.
