It’d be great if the Carolina Panthers could somehow see the second coming of Luke Kuechly roll around any time soon. But it wouldn’t be great if that second coming of Luke Kuechly sprouts up elsewhere, particularly for a division rival.

When speaking with reporters following an OTA session this past week, Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker Devin White said he’s preparing to take his game a step higher in 2022. And that’s a pretty scary prospect for the Panthers and the rest of the NFL, as the talented 24-year-old defender seems to be just scratching the surface of his potential.

“I think for myself to tap into another level – I know what everything feels like, I know all the accolades and I think for myself it’s being consistent with my diet, with my training – doing extra [and] making sure the fourth quarter still feels like the second quarter to me,” White told the media on Wednesday. “As a young player, you kind of slack off in some of those areas because you’re young and you can go out there and run.”

What’s even scarier is what White went on to mention—his aspiration to be as studious as one of the most intelligent and instinctive linebackers the sport has ever seen.

“Like you said, keep getting into the film because that’s kind of the next step that me and coach [Larry] Foote talked about, that Luke Kuechly step,” he’d add. “I have way more athleticism than him, but he [has] way more brains and brains play a big factor in a football game.”

Well, to be fair, let’s check something first. Does White really have more athleticism than Kuechly . . . ?

Okay, maybe not—at least by those measures. But what he does have is all the tools.

White, like Kuechly, is a tremendous athlete in his own right—whose speed, agility and overall talent has made for one of the most disruptive, game-changing forces you can find over the middle of any defense right now. Heck, the Panthers have seen it for themselves.

But if they eventually see White cut off his cable at some point too, then they’ll know the rising star is really in business.
