The Patriots are adding even more competition to their running back position.

According to ESPN, the Patriots have reached an agreement on a one-year deal with Pro Bowl running back Lamar Miller.

The Pats know Miller well. The back started his career in the AFC East in Miami, playing for and leading the Dolphins in rushing from 2012-2015. The 29-year-old spent the past four seasons in Houston. In 2018, he was named to his first Pro Bowl after rushing for 973 yards to go with five touchdowns. Miller rushed for over 800 yards in four seasons in a four form 2014-2018.

He's twice rushed for over 1,000 yards, setting a career high (1,099) with Miami in 2014 and hitting the mark again with the Texans (1,073) in 2016. Miller is also a solid receiving back having caught 209 career passes. Miller, however, is coming off a season-ending knee injury. Last summer, the veteran suffered a torn ACL in the Texans' third preseason game against Dallas and missed the entire 2019 season.

For the Patriots, this is a low-risk, high-reward signing. The team lost veteran running back Brandon Bolden, who opted out, last week. On top of that, returning starter Sony Michel is currently on the physically unable to perform list after undergoing offseason foot surgery.

The Pats are scheduled to have their first padded practice on Aug. 17. Miller will join Michel, James White, Rex Burkhead, Damien Harris and J.J. Taylor vying for a spot in the Patriots running back depth chart.
