Things have gone from bad to worse for the New York Giants following their 17-14 loss to the Atlanta Falcons in Week 3.

ESPN’s Jordan Raanan reports that linebacker Blake Martinez, one of the defensive captains, suffered a torn ACL and will miss the remainder of the season.

“About to be one hell of a story,” Martinez tweeted after news of his torn ACL spread.

Martinez went down without contact early in the first half on Sunday and it was evident the injury was severe. Replays showed his knee “pop” before he fell to the turf and then had to be helped to the sideline.

In 2020, Martinez led the Giants with 151 tackles and added three sacks. He should have been named to the Pro Bowl or awarded an All-Pro honor, but received neither.

Martinez is the second Giants captain to be lost for the season in as many weeks. The team previously lost offensive lineman Nick Gates after he suffered a fractured tibia and fibula against the Washington Football Team.
