Sean Payton calls for major NFL rule change

There has been a ton of criticism surrounding the current rule set around roughing the passer calls in the NFL. Many believe that this rule should be reviewable. Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton made his position on the discussion very clear on Sunday.

Payton spoke with NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero on Sunday, where he revealed that he would also like to see roughing the passer calls be reviewable.

“Well, I think we’re going to vote on one of them this week. I heard the report at the end of the season. Roughing the passer, I’m not going to say it’s a crisis, but whatever is next. Let’s say crisis is level five, I’d say level three. It’s something that we got to be better at. So how do we handle that? So one of the items is being able to possibly challenge roughing the passer. I think that’s the one thing to me that stands out that is really up and down.”

As Payton referred to, this is a topic that appears likely to come up at the NFL’s annual owners meeting later this month. Unfortunately, it seems that there will likely not be enough support for this rule change to go into place.

NFL.com’s Judy Battista reported on Sunday that “a person familiar with the Competition Committee’s conversations” believes that there may not be enough support amongst NFL owners to get this changed this offseason.

While this change would likely make NFL games longer, it could also certainly help the viewing product for fans. We certainly saw some questionable roughing-the-passer calls decide impactful games last year in the NFL. Regardless, it seems very clear where Sean Payton stands on this controversial NFL rule.
