After months of speculation about former New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton, the Denver Broncos finally decided to make a deal with the Saints in order for Payton to become the new head coach in Denver.

Denver gave up some huge compensation to New Orleans in the deal, trading away a 2023 first-round pick and a 2024 2nd-round pick for the right to Payton.

The Broncos will look to move forward from a disastrous 5-12 season in 2022 in large part due to the struggles of star quarterback Russell Wilson in his first year with the organization.

Payton discussed his new quarterback on Tuesday after officially signing with the Broncos, saying that Wilson is “a hard worker” and that he’s “excited about [Wilson].”

“Russell is a hard worker and has played at a high level and won a lot of games in this league,” said Payton via Jeff Duncan of “The pressure is on us to put a good run game together and reduce the degree of difficulty on his position. I’m excited about him.”

Wilson easily had the worst season of his 11-year NFL career, throwing just 16 touchdowns while completing just 60.5 percent of his passes, both being career lows for the nine-time Pro Bowl quarterback. He’s often been compared to former Saints star quarterback Drew Brees due to his ability to overcome his short stature at the quarterback position.

Considering the track record that Payton put together with Brees, he could be the perfect candidate to help turn Wilson’s career around.
