Former New Orleans Saints vice president/assistant general manager of pro personnel Terry Fontenot will become the next general manager of the Atlanta Falcons, the team announced Tuesday.

Fontenot and former Minnesota Vikings assistant general manager/vice president of player personnel George Paton were the two finalists for the Denver Broncos’ GM job. Paton was hired last week.

Fontenot spent seven years as a scout with the Saints before being promoted to his current position. Fontenot was more involved in pro personnel moves than draft decisions, Luke Johnson of the New Orleans Advocate and Times-Picayune said in a recent interview with

He played a role in New Orleans’ decisions to acquire linebacker Demario Davis, cornerback Janoris Jenkins and running back Latavius Murray, among others.

In addition to the Broncos and Falcons, Fontenot also drew interest from the Jacksonville Jaguars and Detroit Lions.

The Broncos began searching for a new GM last week when John Elway stepped down from that role. Elway is still the president of football operations and he led the GM search. Elway will rank above the new GM but Paton will have a final say on roster decisions, including the future of quarterback Drew Lock.
