Tom Brady’s Ex-Teammate Believes Something Else Happened

Tom Brady’s former New England Patriots teammate Tedy Bruschi is one of the many people surprised by the all-time great quarterback’s abrupt decision to rejoin the Tampa Bay Buccaneers earlier this week.

Brady, who Bruschi describes as “calculated,” was retired for just 40 days before he ultimately announced his intentions to return for a third season with the Bucs. On Wednesday, the ex-Pats linebacker suggested that “something happened” to spark Brady’s decision to return to the gridiron.

“Just surprising to me,” Bruschi said during ESPN’s most recent episode of Get Up! “I mean, I haven’t spoken to him or anything like that, but that word you just said … that ‘calculated’ word, it just defines him. … He had a plan, and something didn’t work out. Because this isn’t a guy that just, like, ‘You know, let me just take this day-to-day and see what we’ll do; no, I don’t feel good — I’m just gonna come back.’

“Something happened here and that’s why this is so unexpected for me. … I know his father’s comments, in terms of the media — I’m not buying it. This guy’s calculated. He knew exactly what he was doing but something didn’t work out.”

One theory about Brady’s short-lived retirement suggests that it was an attempt to force his way out of Tampa Bay and return with a new team in 2022. But given his definitive commitment to return and play for the Bucs this coming season, that theory seems dead in the water.

Odds are we won’t get an answer on Brady’s thought process any time soon.
