Tyrann Mathieu winning a Super Bowl is one of the best storylines from the Kansas City Chiefs’ comeback against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, as the star defensive back had a difficult childhood and has overcome a lot to get to this point. Even still, he made it clear he was thinking about his father following the victory.

Mathieu’s biological father, Darrin Hayes, has been in prison for almost Tyrann’s entire life. Hayes was in jail for robbery when Mathieu was born, and he shot and killed a man the day he was released. Hayes was found guilty of second-degree murder and sentenced to life without parole. But on Sunday night, Mathieu tweeted that he can’t wait to hear from his father.

The tweet seemed genuine, so it’s possible Mathieu has had contact with his father and been able to establish some sort of relationship with him.

Like his father, Mathieu’s mother has not been in his life since he was a young boy. Tyrann lived with his grandparents when he was a toddler and was then adopted by his aunt and uncle.

Mathieu got himself into trouble at college and wound up being kicked off the team at LSU, but he straightened things out and has enjoyed a successful NFL career. He has also overcome multiple significant injuries, so you can understand why winning the Super Bowl meant so much to him.
