HOCKEY

ND's Slaggert, Stastney honored

The Notre Dame hockey team was selected to finish fourth in the Big Ten Conference for the 2021-22 season this week in a poll of coaches. Senior center Graham Slaggert and senior defenseman Spencer Stastney also received mention on the league’s preseason teams.

Coach Jeff Jackson’s Fighting Irish, who open play Sunday, Oct. 3 in a preseason exhibition game against the USNTDP team at 5 p.m. on the Lefty Smith Rink in the Compton Family Ice Arena, finished behind the coaches’ preseason picks of Minnesota, Michigan and Wisconsin and ahead of Penn State, Michigan State and Ohio State.

Slaggert, a South Bend native and the son of Irish associate head coach Andy Slaggert, was named to the coaches’ second team. He played on a line with sophomore brother Landon last season and finished with 25 points on seven goals and a team-high 18 assists. He earned Big Ten First Star of the Week honors after scoring a goal and two assists in a 3-2 victory over then top-ranked Minnesota on Jan. 15. He also totaled five points (one goal, four assists) in a sweep at Ohio State Feb. 5-6. He has earned Academic All-Big Ten honors in the two seasons he has been eligible.

Stastney, a Mequon, Wisconsin native, also skated in all 29 games for the Irish during the COVID-19 pandemic season of 2020-21 when they finished 14-13-2 and received a bid to the NCAA Tournament. Stastney had five goals and seven assists last season. He, too, has earned Academic All-Big Ten honors in the two seasons he has been eligible.

Following their exhibition game against USNTDP, the Irish open the regular season Saturday, Oct. 9 at 6 p.m. against Long Island University at the Smith Rink.
