How Bay Area and NorCal Olympians are faring: Swimming, rowing, gymnastics, basketball

Highlighting performances of athletes with Bay Area and Northern California ties at the Olympics:

Kate McLaughlin (Cal) and Brooke Forde (Stanford), swimming: Qualified second with the U.S. in the 4x200 relay.

Damian Lillard (Oakland), men’s basketball: Scored a team-high 21 points as the U.S. blew past Iran 120-66 to bounce back from their opening loss to France on Sunday.

Bryce Mefford (Cal) and Ryan Murphy (Cal), swimming: Mefford qualified third in the 200 backstroke in 1:56.37; Murphy, the defending Olympic champion who was third in the 100 back, advanced in seventh..

Brody Malone (Stanford), men’s gymnastics: Finished 10th in the all-around competition, two spots ahead of U.S. teammate Sam Mikulak.

Makenzie Fischer (Stanford), women’s water polo: Scored twice in the U.S.’s 9-8 loss to Hungary. Maggie Steffens (Danville/Stanford) also scored a goal.

Amber Nebben (Lake Forest), women’s road cycling: Placed fifth in the individual time trial as the top U.S. finisher, ending an American podium streak dating to 1996, when the race made its Olympic debut in Atlanta.

Joachim Sutton (Cal), rowing: Teamed with Frederic Vystavel to win bronze in men’s pairs.
