UConn is playing in the NCAA Tournament title game for the first time since it won a championship in 2014, and one of the reasons for its success has been the play of its big men.

Adama Sanogo has been the Huskies' biggest star during the tournament, averaging 20.2 points, 9.8 rebounds and 1.4 blocks. However, he has played just 26 minutes per game, so UConn has needed to get strong play out of its backup center to spell Sanogo.

Donovan Clingan has delivered that.

Clingan has been a force off the bench for the Huskies. He has played only in small spurts in each of UConn's five games, but he has been an efficient interior scorer, shot-blocker and rebounder. He has also helped keep Sanogo fresh and ready to be a top contributor night in and night out.

Clingan is certainly an eye-catching talent, as he makes plays at the rim with relative ease thanks to his enormous frame.

Just how tall is Clingan? Here's what to know about UConn's efficient freshman as he tries to help guide the Huskies to their fifth national championship.

Who is Donovan Clingan?

Donovan Clingan is a freshman center for UConn who came to the team as the 56th-ranked player in the ESPN 100. He is a native of Bristol, Conn., making him one of three players from Connecticut on the UConn roster.

Clingan's Connecticut roots coupled with his height have made him a fan favorite for the Huskies faithful. He has worked hard to stay grounded during his first collegiate season because of that, but he has ultimately enjoyed his strong first season.

“When I walked on the court for the first time at the XL Center and heard the crowd, that was just crazy,” he told Mike Anthony of “But it didn't get to my head. I was like, all right, that's cool, but I've got a game to play, I've got business to take care of."

"It's definitely a surreal feeling," he added. "It's a dream come true. But I've accomplished one dream and now I'm working toward my second dream. So it's a great feeling to wear a UConn jersey. Just got to keep working and keep winning."

How tall is Donovan Clingan?

Clingan stands at 7-2, and that makes him one of the tallest players in UConn basketball history. He is the tallest player overall since Hasheem Thabeet (7-3) played for Jim Calhoun's squad during the 2008-09 season.

Clingan was 25 inches long at birth and weighed 12 pounds, per ESPN, so his parents Bill and Stacey figured that he was going to be tall. Bill is 6-5. Stacey, who died of breast cancer in March 2018, was 6-4. Her son wears that No. 32 jersey in her honor, as she wore that number during her playing days.

Donovan Clingan stats

Clingan played exclusively off the bench in his first season at UConn, but he was hyper-efficient for the Huskies during the 2022-23 college basketball season. He shot 65.5 percent from the field and led the team in blocks per game with 1.8.

Below is a look at the per-game stats he posted during his freshman season and how they compare to his Huskies teammates.

Stat Per game Rank

Points 7.1 5th
Rebounds 5.7 3rd
Assists 0.5 9th
Steals 0.4 9th

Clingan had one of the best games of his career in UConn's 87-63 win over Iowa, as he posted 12 points, nine rebounds and two blocks in 14 minutes during the contest. He helped keep the Huskies in the game during the first half before they pulled away after halftime.

During the NCAA Tournament, Clingan is averaging 6.2 points, 5.4 rebounds and 2 blocks per game in just 13 minutes. He has been a key force behind Adama Sanogo and should continue to be an efficient low-post scorer and interior defender during the Final Four.
