Arriving on streaming platforms Jan. 24, “Three Bright Stars” is a song dedicated to the memory of Dean Chandler, Lavel Davis Jr. and D’Sean Perry.

The three University of Virginia football players were shot and killed Nov. 13 as they returned from a field trip. At a vigil the next day, Charlottesville singer-songwriter John Kelly was moved by what he saw.

“That was one of the most powerful things I’ve ever seen,” Kelly told The Daily Progress. “They came by the thousands, and they were completely silent. The nylon of jackets while people walked by was the only sound.”

It was a photo of the vigil posted on Instagram that was the literal spark for Kelly’s composition. Shared by University of Virginia president Jim Ryan, it showed a sea of students on the college lawn, below three bright stars in the dark sky above. Kelly, though present at the vigil, had not noticed the stars while in attendance.

After writing his composition and getting the green light from the university, Kelly went about recording the song in December with lots of help from the local community. James McLaughlin, of James McLaughlin’s Mountainside Studio, played drums, while Rusty Speidel provided guitar, Michael Clem bass and Chris Holden, Daniel Clarke keyboards. Kelly also arranged through the school for a group of singers from choir University Singers to provide background vocals.

Kelly himself has two kids of college age, so the mass shooting in November made him think very dramatically about how he might feel if something like this happened to one or both of his offspring. Ultimately, the song is about the vigil itself, and the desire of people, even under such dire circumstances, to maintain a degree of hope.

Kelly, originally from Connecticut, has been performing as an acoustic musician for over two decades. Here’s part of what he wrote about “Three Bright Stars” on his personal blog:

“I was so moved by everyone’s interest in and passion for the project… Amidst final exams, end-of-the-year concerts and more, Michael Clem miraculously rounded up eight students to come in and create and record a choral part. I can’t imagine the song without it and have so much gratitude for him and his talented students.”
