Colorado athletic director Rick George hit a no-doubt home run with his hiring of Deion Sanders as the Buffaloes’ head football coach. But during his pursuit of Coach Prime, more than a few questions on whether it would work out crossed his mind.

In a recent article by David Ubben of The Athletic (subscription required), George explained how even after a successful conversation with Sanders in his Mississippi home, he wasn’t able to unwind until the deal was done.

George left Mississippi believing Colorado had a good opportunity to land its man, but it was impossible to read Sanders’ mind. Was he angling for more leverage at Jackson State? Was he using Colorado as leverage for another job? George didn’t think so, but he’d undergone enough coaching searches and heard

enough stories of searches to sprinkle in plenty of skittishness amid his confidence as he boarded the plane back to Boulder.

“I felt like we were in a good spot,” George told The Athletic, “but you never relax until it’s done.”

Any honest Buffaloes fan will tell you that given CU’s recent history, George’s questions were not out of line. We lived through the Butch Jones saga, and more than a few people thought Steve Sarkisian could be on his way to Boulder. Fortunately, it was meant to be this time. Sanders eliminated those questions with one phrase that has been adopted as a rallying cry.

On Nov. 26, Sanders had an offer from Colorado. Later that week, Sanders called George.

“I’m comin,’” he said.
