Australian Olympian Ellia Green Comes Out As Transgender

Australian gold-medal-winning athlete Ellia Green has come out as transgender. Green was part of Australia’s gold medal-winning women’s Rugby Sevens team at the 2016 Olympics in Rio De Janeiro. He came out during his opening address to the Bingham Cup International Summit on ending transphobia and homophobia in sport. Green promised himself that when he retired from rugby he would “live the rest of my life in the identity, in the body that I should have”. The athlete admitted that transitioning was “really stressful” as people would ask him a lot of questions rather than accepting it. Green believes that banning transgender people from sport is “disgraceful” and “hurtful”. The rugby star claims that “the rates of suicide and mental health [issues] will get even worse”.
