Thomas Tuchel will be the pride of Bavaria tonight as his Bayern Munich side secured a superb 4-2 Der Klassiker win over Bundesliga title rivals Borrusia Dortmund.

The stakes were high ahead of kickoff at the Allianz Arena, with Tuchel charged with the task overhauling Dortmund, after replacing Julian Nagelsmann last week.

The former Dortmund boss was given a helping hand early on, as Gregor Kobel's error gifted Bayern the lead, before two quickfire finishes from captain Thomas Muller put them 3-0 up at half time.

Kingsley Coman extended the hosts advantage after the restart, and despite late consolations from Emre Can and Donyell Malon, there was to be no Dortmund fightback, as Bayern open up a two-point lead in the title race.

Tuchel bounce strikes again

Tuchel has developed a reputation for getting his message across quickly to a new set of players with positive results swiftly following.

However, even by his high standards, this win is a key marker laid down, for what he will expect in the remainder of the 2022/23 season.

His start to life at Chelsea included a 14-match unbeaten run, ending with two final appearances, and a Champions League title, inside a whirlwind six months.

His immediate brief at Bayern will follow a simple pattern, of speedily galvanising a squad which had turned against Nagelsmann, and winning at least one title.

With time against him, the finer details of his strategy will be left until the summer, but the unpredictability he creates in opposition teams will be a vital tool for a motivated Bayern team, in the weeks ahead.

Masterful Muller downs Dortmund again

Muller has been a nemesis for Dortmund down the years, with crucial roles in Der Klassiker meetings, as Bayern have generally edged out their old rivals.

However, his job against Dortmund has tended to be as a string pulling creative hub, as opposed to an outright goal threat.

His last league goal against Dortmund came back in 2018, but he showed a razor sharpness in the box on Tuchel's debut, to remind the Bundesliga of his evergreen powers.

Tuchel boasts a front line filled with pace and creative quality, plus options off the bench, but Muller's hybrid role is not replicated, and his experience is unmatched.

The sensation of Bayern now easing away from Dortmund in the title race is due in no small part to their veteran skipper, and Tuchel will lean on the 33-year-old in the run-in.
