Chelsea 1-2 Lyon LIVE! Penalties win - Women’s Champions League result, match stream and latest updates today
LIVE – Updated at 23:58
Chelsea will meet Barcelona in the Women’s Champions League semi-finals after a dramatic penalty shootout win over Lyon.
When Sara Dabritz had doubled the visitors’ advantage in extra-time following Vanessa Gilles’ 76th-minute goal, Emma Hayes’ side looked as if they were crashing out.
A glorious chance for Sam Kerr in the opening 45 minutes aside, they had struggled to truly trouble the Lyon goal until a frantic end to extra-time.
The excellent Lauren James won a penalty in the dying embers of the game, finally getting some change out of a Lyon defence to have largely held the hosts at bay.
Maren Mjelde then stepped up and scored from the spot, taking the game to the lottery of a shootout. The only sour note of which from a Chelsea perspective was James’ effort being saved, with all four of her teammates scoring and goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger saving twice to send the Blues through.

Chelsea enjoy the kind of magical European night Emma Hayes has been waiting for

18:58 , Jonathan GorrieHayes relishing ‘fantastic’ WSL title battle despite key Chelsea loss
18:37 , Jonathan GorrieChelsea boss Emma Hayes says it is “fantastic” that the Women’s Super League title race is set to go to the wire.
The top four in the WSL are separated by three points, after Manchester City beat Chelsea 2-0 on Sunday.
City are now joint-top with Manchester United, with Chelsea a point behind although they have a game in hand. Arsenal are two points off Chelsea after thumping Tottenham 5-1 on Saturday.
The Gunners also have a game in hand and face all three of the teams above them in the final seven matches.
“We have a game in hand and need to maximise it,” said Hayes. “It is fantastic for the League it is like this.
Sam Kerr interview: I had to join Chelsea to become what I wanted
18:01 , Jonathan GorrieSam Kerr has won every domestic trophy since joining Chelsea and now she is determined to lift the Champions League.
Chelsea came close in 2021 during Kerr’s first full season, but they were beaten 4-0 by Barcelona in the final.
While that was a “painful” defeat, Kerr says crashing out in the group stage last season is the real driving force for Chelsea ahead of the first leg of their quarter-final at holders Lyon tonight. The Blues slumped to a 4-0 defeat against Wolfsburg in their final group game, as a Covid outbreak in the squad caused chaos.
“I think the one that is burning in our brain at the moment is the Wolfsburg defeat and getting knocked out in the group stage,” Kerr tells Standard Sport. “That one really, really hurt. I think that is what we will take into this year more than the Champions League Final.

A moment of qualify from Reiten decided a tight encounter as the Blues secured an advantage going into the second leg at Stamford Bridge next week.
Chelsea had to dig in against Lyon in the second half but a solid defensive display saw them limit chances and frustrate the eight-time champions.

Chelsea relishing Ada Hegerberg challenge in Lyon Champions League decider
17:38 , Jonathan GorrieChelsea captain Magdalena Eriksson insists the Blues have a plan to stop inaugural women’s Ballon d’Or winner Ada Hegerberg ending their Champions League dream.
Chelsea hold a 1-0 aggregate lead going into Thursday night’s quarter-final second leg against holders Lyon at Stamford Bridge.
The French side will be boosted by the return of Hegerberg, who marked her first appearance in more than five months at the weekend by scoring one minute after coming on as a substitute in Lyon’s 6-0 win over Guingamp.
The striker is the leading scorer in the history of the Women’s Champions League, but centre-back Eriksson is adamant Chelsea have what it takes to keep her quiet.
“It’s going to be a great challenge [coming up against Hegerberg],” Eriksson said. “I’m here for it.
