Chelsea vs Villarreal LIVE!

Substitute goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga made two shootout saves as Champions League winners Chelsea beat Spain’s Villarreal 6-5 on penalties to add the Uefa Super Cup to their trophy collection tonight.

Extra time had ended 1-1 at Belfast’s Windsor Park ground, with Chelsea replacing goalkeeper Edouard Mendy with Kepa in the final seconds in what turned out to be a master-stroke as penalties loomed.

The Blues were appearing in this European showpiece fixture for the fifth time after seeing off Manchester City in Porto in May to clinch a second Champions League triumph. Winners against Real Madrid in 1998, Chelsea finished as runners-up in 2012, 2013 and 2019, losing to Atletico Madrid, Bayern Munich and Liverpool respectively.

Chelsea started brightly and went ahead through Hakim Ziyech to lead 1-0 at the interval, though their joy was tempered by a worrying shoulder injury for the winger. That injury seemed to take the wind out of Chelsea’s sails for the second half, and Gerard Moreno deservedly levelled after the break to take the game to extra-time and a penalty shootout - and Kepa

Substitute goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga made two shootout saves as Champions League winners Chelsea beat Spain’s Villarreal 6-5 on penalties to add the UEFA Super Cup to their trophy collection on Wednesday.

Extra time had ended 1-1 at Belfast’s Windsor Park ground, with Chelsea replacing goalkeeper Edouard Mendy with Kepa in the final seconds in what turned out to be a master-stroke as penalties loomed.

Kai Havertz missed the first spot-kick but after that Chelsea were perfect while both Aissa Mandi and Raul Albiol both saw their penalties saved by Kepa as Chelsea won 6-5.

Tuchel: Ziyech injury ‘serious'

23:23 , Tom Doyle

Tuchel was less positive about Ziyech’s shoulder injury...

“If you take a player out during the first half it’s serious.”

Tuchel: Kepa change based on statistics

23:22 , Tom Doyle

Thomas Tuchel has confirmed he had pre-planned introducing Kepa for a penalty shootout.

"It was not spontaneous," he told BT Sport. "We talked about it with the goalkeepers after the first cup game against Barnsley. We had some statistics. We were well prepared.

"Kepa has the best percentage at saving penalties, the analysing guys and goalkeeping coaches showed me the data. We spoke to the players that this could happen when we play in knockout games. It's fantastic how Edouard accepted it.

"There is proof that Kepa is better in this discipline. They're team players. Edouard does not show the pride to not step off the field. He was happy to do it for the team and take this for the team."

23:05 , Tom Doyle

A great moment for Kepa!

23:04 , Tom Doyle

Villarreal receive their runners-up medals... and now it’s Chelsea’s turn.

Azpilicueta lifts the trophy, and the squad celebrates. It may not be a priority trophy, but try telling those players out there that this one doesn’t matter.

Watch: Kepa wins shootout

22:58 , Tom Doyle

A great stop from Kepa to win the shootout - it wasn’t a bad penalty from Albiol, but there wasn’t enough pace on it.

22:55 , Tom Doyle

The Chelsea players mob Kepa - what a moment for him, especially after losing his starting role to Mendy.

That is the sort of night which could turn his Chelsea career around - and full credit to Tuchel.

Here we go...

22:33 , Tom Doyle

Kepa hasn’t touched the ball so far, so it’s a bold call to bring him on - but it looks as if it was a planned change given Mendy’s calm reaction.

FT in ET: Penalty shootout to follow

22:33 , Tom Doyle

So, the game will go to a penalty shootout - and Kepa is on in goal for Chelsea!

James Robson in Belfast

22:30 , Tom Doyle

On comes Kepa for the shootout. You can’t say Tuchel isn’t taking this seriously.

Kepa on for penalties

22:30 , Tom Doyle

Here he is! Kepa replaces Mendy for a potential penalty shootout.

22:29 , Tom Doyle

Great stop by Mendy here off a header, but Villarreal are flagged offside from the initial delivery.

22:29 , Tom Doyle

Kepa is back and is pulling up his socks... and he’s pulling off his top, so it looks like he’ll be on!

22:28 , Tom Doyle

Interestingly, Kepa has gone down the tunnel with Chelsea’s goalkeeping coach - could he be a late change for the penalty shootout?

22:27 , Tom Doyle

115 mins: Chelsea try to work a shot in the box, but the whistle goes - it looks like Mount was offside.

22:24 , Tom Doyle

112 mins: No way through still for Chelsea - and after beating Manchester United on penalties in the Europa League final, Villarreal will surely fancy their chances of another shootout victory over English opposition...

Chance for Mount!

22:20 , Tom Doyle

Chelsea are almost 2-1 up as Mount does well to turn and shoot inside the box, but Asenjo makes a strong stop with one hand to turn the ball behind for a corner.

Mount is first to a loose ball, but Raba does just enough to block his drive on the edge of the area.

22:18 , Tom Doyle

We’re back underway, and still no sign of Tammy Abraham.

This could be his final game in a Chelsea shirt, but he remains a sub so far - and he’s not warming up.

HT, ET | Chelsea 1-1 Villarreal

22:16 , Tom Doyle

All square at the break - 15 minutes remaining until penalties...

22:11 , Tom Doyle

Chelsea want a penalty after Azpilicueta goes down in the Villarreal penalty area, but nothing doing from the referee - and Alonso, who received the ball beforehand, was offside regardless.

Chance for Chelsea!

22:09 , Tom Doyle

So close for Pulisic!

Chelsea work the ball from the right - the ball loops up and then falls for Pulisic, who toe-pokes an effort just wide of the right-hand post!

22:05 , Tom Doyle

5 mins: Villarreal are knocking the ball around at the back with Chelsea sitting off - you sense both teams might fancy a gentle kickabout before penalties!

22:01 , Tom Doyle

Raba spots Mendy off his line and goes for goal from inside his own half... he gets it all wrong, but that was a little warning to the Chelsea keeper.

Kick-off

21:59 , Tom Doyle

We are back underway in Belfast - have Chelsea got another 30 minutes in their legs?

FT: Chelsea 1-1 Villareal - extra-time to follow

21:55 , Tom Doyle

So, with the scores level in Belfast, we’ll have 30 minutes of extra-time.

21:54 , Tom Doyle

Great take-down from Alonso on the left of the box off a high through-ball - he goes for a spectacular near-post drive, but hits the side netting.

21:53 , Tom Doyle

Chelsea sense a winner as the ball falls kindly for Pulisic - he tries to find an angle on the edge of the box, but it eventually hits Alonso and he’s offside, which pretty much sums up the Blues’ second half.

21:52 , Tom Doyle

More pressure from Villarreal, but Morlanes takes a few touches and then shunts a poor cross right at Mendy - terrible.

21:51 , Tom Doyle

FOUR minutes of injury time as Villarreal press for a winner.

21:51 , Tom Doyle

Raba does well to carry the ball upfield and then win a loose ball, and wins a free-kick. It’s taken quickly, but Villarreal shuffle possession back.

Mario crosses low, but it’s just behind Raba!

James Robson in Belfast

21:49 , Tom Doyle

Ziyech’s departure appears to have been the turning point. Chelsea have not been the same since, with Villarreal twice hitting the woodwork and then finding an equaliser.

It is hard to see where Chelsea are going to find a winner.

21:48 , Tom Doyle

Pulisic tests Asenjo with a fierce drive off a tidy Jorginho pass - good save, but the flag goes up for offside.

21:48 , Tom Doyle

87 mins: Chelsea are really pressing after going to sleep for half an hour - they really don’t want to play extra-time...

21:45 , Tom Doyle

Villarreal subs - Alberto Moreno is cramping up, and on goes Morlanes.

Off goes Dia after that lovely assist, with Raba on.

Watch: Moreno goal

21:45 , Tom Doyle

Here is the moment Villarreal went level...

21:44 , Tom Doyle

Corner to Chelsea - Jorginho cracks one at goal, but it’s blocked well... and replays show he mishit it badly.

The Italian is not up to speed after the Euros...

21:41 , Tom Doyle

Another Chelsea change, with Cesar Azpilicueta on for Hudson-Odoi.

21:41 , Tom Doyle

Corner to Chelsea - the ball is flicked high, and Asenjo comes out to punch. He comes again for another good ball, and the whistle eventually goes with three Villarreal players down in the box.

21:39 , Tom Doyle

78 mins: A reminder that if the game finishes level, we will have extra-time.

To be honest, neither team really needs another 30 minutes so close to the new season - but if it’s all square after that, we’ll have a penalty shootout.

21:36 , Tom Doyle

So, what do Chelsea have in response?

A fair few of their players are clearly off the pace in terms of match fitness. While that is a concern right now in terms of winning the Super Cup, it could set alarm bells ringing for the start of the season.

Crystal Palace boss Patrick Vieira will be watching this and thinking if the Eagles can stand strong in the first half at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea could be there for the taking after the break...

James Robson in Belfast

21:35 , Tom Doyle

You can’t say Villarreal did not deserve that. They have been as dominant in the second half as Chelsea were in the first. Eventually something had to give.

GOAL! Chelsea 1-1 Villarreal | Gerard Moreno, 73 mins

21:34 , Tom Doyle

Villarreal are level!

Chelsea won’t feel too hard done by that as the Spaniard have been excellent in the second half - and Moreno brilliantly finishes a lovely move after a great flick from Dia, curling high past Mendy into the net.

Game on!

21:33 , Tom Doyle

Jorginho and Pulisic dally, and Jorginho loses possession easily...

21:31 , Tom Doyle

70 mins: Two Villarreal changes: Gaspar on for Capoue, with Gomez replacing Trigueros.

21:28 , Tom Doyle

Chance for Villarreal, but Mendy keeps it out from a tight angle.

This game isn’t over yet...

James Robson in Belfast

21:25 , Tom Doyle

Here come the changes and the loudest cheer is for Mount. Chelsea needed some more energy with Villarreal very much on top this half.

Another mixed bag for Werner today. Worked hard enough - but not enough threat.

21:25 , Tom Doyle

64 mins: Triple change for Chelsea here.

Kante gets a standing ovation as he departs for Jorginho. Werner and Zouma are also off for Mount and Christensen.

21:18 , Tom Doyle

First change for Villarreal as Estupinan replaces Pedraza.

James Robson in Belfast

21:17 , Tom Doyle

Expect Tuchel to make a number of changes this half. He will not want to work his players too hard, but will also see the value in getting them right up to speed in preparation for Palace on Saturday. You would imagine he would want to get some minutes into the legs of Mount.

21:17 , Tom Doyle

Chelsea are under the cosh here as Villarreal really push for an equaliser - Tuchel is not happy at all.

Off the post!

21:13 , Tom Doyle

51 mins: Villarreal hit the woodwork for the second time tonight as Mendy plays a really poor ball out.

The Spaniards capitalise and Moreno shoots, but cracks it off the post! A real let-off for Chelsea’s keeper, who has never fully convinced with the ball at his feet at Stamford Bridge.

21:08 , Tom Doyle

‘Half the ground thought it was in’ cliche alert!

Kai Havertz drives at goal from the left and crashes one towards goal - it spins off the side netting, giving the momentary illusion of a goal, but no dice.

21:07 , Tom Doyle

Ziyech watches on with his arm in a sling - he looks a bit miserable, which is entirely fair.

21:06 , Tom Doyle

Early corner for Villarreal, but Chelsea clear their lines. Kovacic loses possession and Villarreal sense blood, but Calobah hacks clear.

21:06 , Tom Doyle

We are back underway in Belfast.

Ziyech has made his way back to the bench with his arm in a sling - let’s hope that’s merely precautionary.

Setback for Ziyech

21:04 , Tom Doyle

That injury is a real setback for Hakim Ziyech.

He showed glimpses of his best last season, but this looked like being the chance of a great start to the new campaign for him personally - especially after such a strong showing this evening.

Now, though, he will likely be sidelined for a while, and will face a real fight for minutes when he returns - especially with Romelu Lukaku set to arrive imminently.

Watch: Moreno hits the bar

20:57 , Tom Doyle

This is how close Villarreal were to an equaliser...

Half-time | Chelsea 1-0 Villarreal

20:51 , Tom Doyle

So, Chelsea are a goal to the good at the interval thanks to Hakim Ziyech - but his shoulder injury will be a real concern ahead of the new season.

The winger will need to be diagnosed, but he looked in real pain - and the staff treated it as a possible dislocation. If that is the case, it could be some weeks - and possibly even months - before he’s back.

Off the bar!

20:50 , Tom Doyle

45+3 mins: Close shave for Chelsea as Moreno crashes a volley off the bar at the back post!

The left-back cracked the ball at goal, but fortunately for Chelsea, it bounced down near the goalline and away to safety.

20:47 , Tom Doyle

A real crunching challenge from Ruidger here - he wins the ball but goes in really high, and picks up a booking.

Replays show that could easily have been red.

Villarreal are not happy, and neither is Thomas Tuchel - he picks up a yellow card himself.

20:43 , Tom Doyle

Really bad news for Chelsea as Ziyech has his arm wrapped up in his shirt and slowly makes his way off - that looks like a dislocation, or at the very least it’s being treated as such.

a man with a football ball: (Getty Images) © Provided by Evening Standard (Getty Images)
20:41 , Tom Doyle

It’s an odd one as replays show Ziyech didn’t land on his elbow - he didn’t even hit the turf.

The injury appeared to happen while he was standing up, and that’s a concern - let’s hope it’s not a dislocation.

20:40 , Tom Doyle

Concern for Chelsea here as Ziyech is down and is holding his shoulder.

He looks in pain, and the Chelsea physio is on. That is a concern, as shoulder injuries are rarely short-term issues.

James Robson in Belfast

20:38 , Tom Doyle

Ziyech is having a day out. So is Alonso. Perhaps the pair of them want to send a message to Tuchel that they can have big impacts on the season.

Ziyech has scored one and but for better finishing, might have assisted two more.

Alonso has been a constant thorn on the left and Villarreal cannot handle his energy or aggression.

Chance for Zouma!

20:37 , Tom Doyle

It should be 2-0 now as Ziyech bends in a glorious free-kick from the left to the back post which is practically impossible to defend.

Zouma meets it, but volleys over on the stretch! Could he have headed that in? Probably, but it came at him quickly.

Save by Asenjo!

20:35 , Tom Doyle

Chelsea are very nearly 2-0 up as Alonso meets a cross from the left and tries to finish low, but Asenjo gets down low to parry away.

Save by Mendy!

20:34 , Tom Doyle

Villarreal have responded well to going behind.

Mendy races off his line and makes a good low block to deny Dia after the forward broke in behind onto a nice through-ball - great goalkeeping.

Watch: Ziyech goal

20:33 , Tom Doyle

Here is the moment Chelsea went a goal up...

20:31 , Tom Doyle

It was a good team move from Chelsea, but a relatively simple one for Villarreal to concede.

Replays show as much, with Unai Emery incandescent with rage after the goal went in, hopping up and down and screaming.

James Robson in Belfast

20:30 , Tom Doyle

That goal was all about Alonso’s quick thinking in sending Havertz away on the left, whose cross found Ziyech to fire home.

No more than Chelsea deserve and a sign of what they can do when they get their precision right.

20:30 , Tom Doyle

Well - the game opens up for Villarreal and the ball is loose in Chelsea’s area, but Tuchel’s men clear.

That was very nearly 1-1 straight away...

GOAL! Chelsea 1-0 Villarreal | Hakim Ziyech, 27 mins

20:29 , Tom Doyle

Chelsea lead!

Their good work is rewarded as Ziyech finishes a great team move.

Alonso plays the ball down the flank to Havertz, who gets a great low ball across goal for Ziyech to finish in the centre.

20:26 , Tom Doyle

Some big trophies on show in Belfast tonight...

James Robson in Belfast

20:25 , Tom Doyle

Chelsea are totally dominating this, but Werner’s is still the only real chance of note. Their final ball has let them down, with Werner guilty of not playing in Ziyech early enough moments ago.

Havertz is dropping and drifting to find space, but he is not being picked out.

20:25 , Tom Doyle

23 mins: Chelsea win a free-kick wide left. Ziyech delivers, the ball is cleared... the ball comes back to Ziyech, who crosses again, but Chalobah shoots wide at the back post after taking it down.

20:23 , Tom Doyle

Raul Albiol vs Timo Werner looks a good battle.

Werner has the pace to get in behind here, but Albiol catches up and plays the ball off the forward. Both end up on the floor after the ball ran out for a goal kick, but help each other up.

20:22 , Tom Doyle

A rare shift up the pitch from Villarreal as they win a free-kick 45 yards out, but the delivery is hopeful more than anything else and Chelsea deal with it easily.

20:20 , Tom Doyle

Pedraza concedes a free-kick out wide on the right.

Ziyech whips the ball in, but it’s cleared. The ball eventually comes back to Ziyech who tries the same from open play, but Asenjo collects.

20:18 , Tom Doyle

A meeting of great footballing minds...

20:18 , Tom Doyle

15 mins: Chelsea are still probing for the breakthrough.

Villarreal looked startled early doors, but are working hard and doubling up out wide to try and stymie Chelsea’s wing-backs. It’s working so far, but can they keep this work rate up off the ball?

Close for Kante!

20:10 , Tom Doyle

9 mins: Brilliant recovery from Kante as he wins the ball high up and smashes an effort from 25 yards.

Asenjo looks like he got a vital touch on it, but a goal kick is given.

Villarreal are really up against it...

20:09 , Tom Doyle

Hudson-Odoi looks confident against Moreno, and tries to drive outside him here.

Good defending, but that looks a big battle for the Villarreal wing-back.

James Robson in Belfast

20:08 , Tom Doyle

A bright start from Alonso pushing high up to offer Chelsea wide. It still seems odd that they were prepared to let him go as part of the Lukaku deal. He was one of the key performers under Tuchel last season and there is no reason to think he can’t have an impact again.
