Player, coaches guide for inaugural Northern Colorado Hailstorm roster

Jul. 7—The Northern Colorado Hailstorm inaugural season is under way, and the roster is just about set. Get to know the players and staff of the brand new USL League One team that's made home on the Front Range.

Trevor Amann

Position: Forward

Hometown: Westminster, Colorado

College: Midwestern State University

Previous club: N/A

Age: 24

Amann signed his first professional contract this spring after finishing his time with Midwestern State in Texas. He spent his junior, senior and fifth year with the Mustangs. Amann transferred from the Colorado School of Mines after his sophomore year. He scored his first professional goal at Charlotte Independence in May and his first home goal against Central Valley in June.

Rob Cornwall

Position: Defender

Hometown: Dublin, Ireland

College: N/A

Previous club: Bohemian FC

Age: 27

Cornwall was the first player to sign with the franchise in the spring of 2022 after his time with Bohemian FC. He made 34 appearances. Of those, he started 25 games and was a team captain in six. Cornwall signed his first professional contract at age 17 with Shelbourne FC, which is based in Drumcondra, a suburb of Dublin.

Owen Damm

Position: Defender

Hometown: Versaille, Kentucky

College: N/A

Previous club: On loan from Louisville City

Age: 18

Damm is the youngest player on the roster and signed with Louisville out of high school. He helped his team win three district titles and was a three-time All-League selection. Damm is on loan from the USL Championship team, which is a step above League One.

Jerry Desdunes

Position: Midfielder

Hometown: Leogane, Haiti

College: N/A

Previous club: Albion San Diego

Age: 21

Desdunes started his professional career at Peachtree City, where he was on loan, and then went out to San Diego for the 2021 season. He signed with Northern Colorado and scored the franchise's first-ever goal on April 6 against the Colorado Switchbacks. His most recent goal game this week against Forward Madison.

Brecc Evans

Position: Defender

Hometown: Culver City, California

College: Cal Poly

Previous club: Memphis 901

Age: 22

Evans came to the Hailstorm after a successful season with USL Championship team Memphis 901 FC. He attended Cal Poly in 2018 but left after his freshman year to pursue a professional career. Evans played with North Texas FC in 2019, when the team won the USL League One title.

Leo Folla

Position: Defender

Hometown: New York, New York

College: St. Francis University-Brooklyn

Previous club: FC Tulsa

Age: 27

During his time in Tulsa, Folla helped the team advance to the USL Championship conference quarterfinals. He also spent time on the USL League Two level, which is the final division in the USL soccer tier.

Marky Hernández

Position: Midfielder

Hometown: Anaheim, California

College: Cal-State Fullerton

Previous club: Chattanooga Red Wolves

Age: 25

Hernández came to northern Colorado after spending time with three prior professional clubs, including current League One rival, Chattanooga. During his college career, Hernández attended Golden West Community College before transferring to Cal-State Fullerton. In his two seasons with the Titans, he had four goals, six assists and 44 shot attempts.

Stefan Lukic

Position: Midfielder

Hometown: Suljam, Serbia

College: Oklahoma Wesleyan

Previous club: Corpus Christi FC

Age: 26

Lukic comes to the club after a stint with Corpus Christi FC, which is a USL League Two team, where he scored seven times and helped the team qualify for the league quarterfinals for the first time in history. At OKWU, Lukic finished with 24 goals and 43 assists, earning NAIA First-Team All-America every year from 2018 to 2021. He also won the NAIA National Player of the Year in 2019. Prior to his university career, he played on several international youth clubs.

Shane McFaul

Position: Midfielder

Hometown: Dublin, Ireland

College: N/A

Previous club: Sudet

Age: 36

McFaul is the oldest and most experienced player on the Hailstorm roster. He signed his first professional contract two decades ago at age 16. His athletic resume includes the Republic of Ireland youth teams, 10 former clubs. McFaul has already earned a "C" coaching license for the Union of European Football Associations and is working toward his "B" license.

Lachlan McLean

Position: Forward

Hometown: Sydney, Australia

College: Southern Illinois-Edwardsville

Previous club: Greenville Triumph

Age: 26

Known as "Lachy" to his teammates, McLean has already scored one goal and assisted on four, including the franchise's first. His resume includes a stop at fellow USL League One team Greenville Triumph FC, where he scored three goals — one was the game winner against North Carolina FC — and two assists. In college, McLean finished with 20 goals.

Destan Norman

Position: Midfielder

Hometown: Fort Collins, Colorado

College: University of Denver

Previous club: N/A

Age: 23

Norman signed his first professional contract after the inaugural tryout last year, following his time with the Pioneers. He played for Denver from 2017 through 2021, earning a Summit League second team nod this past season and two academic awards.

Nortei Nortey

Position: Midfielder

Hometown: London, England

College: N/A

Previous club: Queen of the South

Age: 27

Nortey comes to Colorado from Queen of the South, based in Scotland, and played four different positions. In the English National League, Nortey scored eight goals and was a member of the Chelsea FC Academy. Nortey has scored one goal this season.

Thomas Olsen

Position: Goalkeeper

Hometown: Las Vegas, Nevada

College: University of San Diego

Previous club: FF Jaro

Age: 27

After college, Olsen started his professional career with FC Tucson, a fellow USL League One team. Then he transferred to the Las Vegas Lights and FF Jaro, based in Finland. Olsen has also played with Team USA in the 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup.

Irvin Parra

Position: Forward

Hometown: Inglewood, California

College: N/A

Previous club: Charlotte Independence

Age: 28

Parra has started his Hailstorm career with a bang, scoring six goals — tied at No. 4 in the league and a team best — and assisting on three. He has played in Germany and the United States in his career and was the first USL Championship player to finish a season with 10-plus goals and assists in the same season.

Johan Peñaranda

Position: Goalkeeper

Hometown: Long Beach, New York

College: University of Pittsburgh and Florida International

Previous club: Municipal Santa Ana

Age: 22

Peñaranda recorded 38 saves and two shutouts during his time at FIU, including an average of .96 goals allowed across seven games in the spring of 2021. While at Pitt, he helped the team advance to its first ACC title in 35 years. Peñaranda spent time with Municipal Santa Ana in Costa Rica prior to signing with the Hailstorm. He has 12 saves on the season.

Danny Robles

Position: Midfielder

Hometown: Burien, Washington

College: N/A

Previous club: Tacoma Defiance

Age: 20

Robles might not be able to legally drink, but he already has a long playing career. He worked through the Seattle Sounders youth ranks before getting signed by the Tacoma Defiance, the Seattle Sounders B team, in 2018. This season, he has two goals and has started in 11 of his 15 appearances.

Arthur Rogers

Position: Defender

Hometown: London, England

College: University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley

Previous club: Hartford Athletic

Age: 25

Rogers played in two seasons for Hartford Athletic, making 40 appearances and scoring three times. During his three seasons at UTRGV, Rogers scored three times and logged 10 assists. He also played for Corpus Christi FC during his senior year of college.

Daniel Scally

Position: Midfielder

Hometown: Glasgow, Scotland

College: N/A

Previous club: Stirling Albion

Age: 22

Scally spent over two years as a professional in Scotland, making 62 appearances and 11 goals. He also contributed nine assists. As a member of the Scottish League One, he had three goals and three assists in 19 games. He was a member of Stirling Albion for one season before coming to the United States.

Denso Ulysse

Position: Defender

Hometown: Gonaives, Haiti

College: N/A

Previous club: Richmond Kickers

Age: 23

Ulysse signed with Northern Colorado after one season with league opponent, the Richmond Kickers. He also played with Inter Miami CF in its first year as an MLS team and Tacoma Defiance. Ulysse played for Haiti on the U23 national team in 2020.

Ethan Vanacore-Decker

Position: Midfielder

Hometown: Manahawkin, New Jersey

College: Rutgers

Previous club: Union Omaha

Age: 27

Vanacore-Decker won the 2021 USL League One championship with his former club, Union Omaha. The year prior, he was named to the second team All-USL League One and led the league in assists.

Éamon Zayed

Position: Head coach

Hometown: Dublin, Ireland

College: N/A

Previous club: Chattanooga Red Wolves

Zayed was named head coach last August after an 18-year career. Most recently, he was with the Chattanooga Red Wolves, another USL League One team. In the 2019 and 2020 seasons, he made 19 appearances. He was also in a player-coach role during his final season. Zayed also spent time at Indy Eleven and Charlotte Independence. Prior to his arrival in the U.S. in 2016, Zayed played on the Irish and Libyan national teams. In his playing career, Zayed made 441 appearances and scored 226 goals.

Kevin Sawchak

Position: Assistant coach

Hometown: Atlanta, Georgia

College: University of Alabama-Birmingham

Previous club: Chattanooga Red Wolves

Sawchak joined the Hailstorm staff, following Zayed from the Red Wolves, where he was an assistant. Sawchak played at UAB from 2007 to 2010 as a four-year starter and senior captain, leaving school early to play overseas, and finished his degree four years ago. He has three coaching licenses — a fourth license is pending — and a master's degree in strength and conditioning.

The Hailstorm has played at the University of Northern Colorado's Jackson Stadium and Colorado State's Canvas Stadium. It will eventually play at the Future Legends Complex in Windsor, which is still under construction.
