Tottenham vs Man City - LIVE!

Tottenham showed that life might not be too bad if Harry Kane does leave ?as they put in a rousing display to beat Manchester City 1-0.

The future of Kane has been the major talking point of the summer as he is keen to move on this summer, with City his preferred destination, and his late return to training meant that he was not included in the matchday squad.

Kane was in the stadium to watch the game and he will have been left in no doubt how the fans feel about the situation following a loud rendition of: “Are you watching Harry Kane?” While Kane was late in reporting back for pre-season training, his partner in crime Heung-min Son was signing a new contract and endeared himself to the fans even further by scoring a 55th-minute winner.

The South Korean loves playing against City and it was the seventh time he has scored against them and the fourth in four games in north London.

It was a dream start for new boss Nuno Santo Espirito, who has not been dealt the easiest hand given his appointment, and the manner of the performance suggested that Spurs can challenge for the top spot.

City’s defence of their Premier League title began with a defeat, but with this game out of the way now they may up their ante in their chase of Kane, which has so far not progressed past an opening bid of £100million.

That’s a wrap for this evening. It’s been a great day for Spurs fans; not so much for Man City supporters.

We’ll be back bright and early on Monday morning with all the latest news and reaction to this thrilling north London clash.

Bye for now.

Guardiola: ‘It is the same mystery'

20:38 , Tom Doyle

Pep Guardiola, who last week revealed he wants to sign Harry Kane, was not prepared to bite this time when asked if City’s performance showed why they need the Spurs man.

“We are the same people as last season, Sergio (Aguero) has gone unfortunately but we only had him for seven games.

“We are the same people. We won the Premier League and we made very good things. It is a tough rival, we did everything to win.

“It is the same people as last season and we scored loads of goals. It has happened, we were there, we arrived many times and today we could not score and it is the same mystery. We are good enough to score a goal.”

Kane will return ‘when he is ready'

20:37 , Tom Doyle

Spurs boss Nuno says Harry Kane will join the squad when he is ready.

Kane trained on Sunday morning and Nuno said: “Harry, like (new signings) Bryan (Gil), Cristian Romero, they joined us later.

“For Cristian and Bryan it was very important to be here today. To feel the atmosphere and be in the stadium and be in the hotel, attending the meeting, but knowing they don’t have too many sessions with us.

“Harry worked this morning, he is preparing himself and when he is ready he will join the group and help the team.”

What an atmosphere today...

‘Spurs are writing a new chapter'

19:27 , Tom Doyle

And more from Dan Kilpatrick here on the atmosphere in north London and the sense that Spurs are writing a new chapter - even if it doesn’t include Harry Kane.

Spurs showed there would be life after Kane with a hugely encouraging performance, characterised by many of the qualities the side has been missing for two years.

They were organised, committed, aggressive, assertive and – eventually – decisive, as Heung-min Son fired home a 55th-minute winner.

With or without Kane, Spurs look ready to write a new chapter

Spurs player ratings

19:25 , Tom Doyle

Dan Kilpatrick was in north London to run the rule over Nuno’s squad, handing out two 9/10s to Spurs.

Read his full player ratings here.

Sterling rues lack of control

19:21 , Tom Doyle

Raheem Sterling told Sky Sports after the game: “I thought we could have controlled the game a little bit better and we allowed them to counter attack a bit too much.

“They put the ball in the net and we couldn’t, but it’s a long season and we will bounce back from this one.”

On his partnership with Grealish down the right, Sterling said: “I’ve played with Jack a few times and it’s a good partnership but we will learn each other’s games a bit better as the season goes on and it will get better and better.”

Guardiola: We were not clinical enough

19:20 , Tom Doyle

City boss Pep Guardiola was left to rue his side’s lack of cutting edge.

“You see the stats, the intention to create chances, unfortunately we were not clinical enough,” he said on Sky Sports.

“In general the game was good.

“Our intention and our approach was really good all game - 37 more games, it’s a long season ahead of us.”

Nuno asked about Kane chants

18:57 , Tom Doyle

Spurs fans could be heard singing “Are you watching Harry Kane?” during the closing stages of the match as Tottenham closed in on victory.

Asked about his star striker, who has been linked with a move to City, Nuno said: “Harry is one of the best players in the world so we are very lucky to have and he has to get ready and help the team.”

Son: 'Spurs did amazingly’

18:55 , Tom Doyle

“We did a great job. We prepared really well and worked hard in pre-season and that showed out on the pitch. We did amazingly.”

Son scored 17 Premier League goals last season. Asked if he feels he can surpass that figure this time round, he said: “I don’t promise.

“I will try my best game by game but I play for the team and things come automatically when I play for the team, so let’s see at the end of the season if I break this record or not.

“Obviously we wanted to start well. It was an incredible performance and everyone worked so hard to get the three points. Manchester City are currently the best team in the world and we fought so hard to make a great start to the season.

Watch: Spurs celebrate at full-time

18:42 , Tom Doyle

This is one for Spurs fans to watch, and rewatch, and rewatch...

18:27 , Tom Doyle

The stadium is rocking as the Spurs fans celebrate a memorable win. Son is applauding all four stands as Daniel Levy looks on.

It is early days, but this really does feel like the start of a new era for the club.

Dan Kilpatrick at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

18:25 , Tom Doyle

The perfect start to the Nuno Espirito Santo era and a result that will shift the narrative around Tottenham’s prospects this season.

It felt like the best possible time to play City – but take nothing away from Spurs, who are also very much a work in progress still. A penny for Kane’s thoughts.

Full-time! Spurs 1-0 Man City

18:22 , Tom Doyle

Spurs have done it! That was a top performance against the Premier League champions.

18:22 , Tom Doyle

Seconds remain...

18:22 , Tom Doyle

Spurs are looking the more likely to score in injury time, but have to be careful not to lost control on the break.

De Bruyne tries to break, but Sanchez makes a superb tackle to the cheers of thousands of Spurs fans.

18:19 , Tom Doyle

FOUR minutes for Spurs to see this one out...

18:18 , Tom Doyle

Poor challenge from Grealish on Lucas - the Brazilian is not happy and it sparks a mini-melee.

Anthony Taylor eventually books the pair.

18:17 , Tom Doyle

89 mins: Hojbjerg goes off to huge applause, and summer signing Cristian Romero is on for his debut.

18:14 , Tom Doyle

De Bruyne is running the show - he finds Torres out wide, but his low cross-shot is held by Lloris.

18:13 , Tom Doyle

Another half-chance for City as Torres tries to cheekily squeeze the ball into the near post from the byline, but Lloris blocks it out.

18:12 , Tom Doyle

This one isn’t over yet... De Bruyne fires one in from 25 yards out, and Lloris flings himself to his left to punch the ball away. A solid save, but one he had to make.

18:11 , Tom Doyle

Changes for City - Zinchenko and De Bruyne on for Mendy and Mahrez, who have both been poor.

18:04 , Tom Doyle

Another change for Spurs as Bergwijn makes way for Lo Celso.

18:03 , Tom Doyle

74 mins: Grealish gets in behind on the left off a tidy pass from Jesus, but there’s nobody in the middle and he has to shoot at goal - Lloris saves.

Grealish seems to apologise, but to be honest, there was no striker to find.

17:59 , Tom Doyle

70 mins: City finally play a striker as Jesus comes on for Sterling... but he’s going to play on the left wing.

Torres stays central - make of that what you will.

Dan Kilpatrick at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

17:56 , Tom Doyle

Spurs are likely going to tire in the final 30 minutes and you wonder how impactful the benches will prove. City are readying Gabriel Jesus. Nuno will surely be thinking about Giovani Lo Celso or Harry Winks.

17:54 , Tom Doyle

65 mins: Lucas gets booked after he commits a foul on Grealish and then gets into a tussle after refusing to give City the ball back.

Watch: Son goal

17:53 , Tom Doyle

Here is how Spurs went in front...

A great finish from Son...

Dan Kilpatrick at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

17:51 , Tom Doyle

A timely reminder that Kane or no Kane, Spurs still have one match-winning forward in Son. The South Korean finally makes one of their counter-attacks count with a superb, low finish. This is turning into a hugely encouraging afternoon for Nuno’s side.

Miss by Bergwijn!

17:48 , Tom Doyle

This is a big, big moment. Spurs break and Bergwijn is in on the left with just Ederson to beat... but it’s an awful finish into the side netting.

17:47 , Tom Doyle

Pressure from City as the ball bounces around the Spurs area, but Lloris punches away - and Spurs launch a counter...

GOAL! Tottenham 1-0 Man City | Heung-min Son | 54 mins

17:42 , Tom Doyle

Spurs lead through Son!

The hosts counter, and Son swings a shot from the right of the edge of the box towards the bottom left-hand corner.

Dias tries to clear and falls over, possibly distracting Ederson - who doesn’t dive - and the ball bounces in!

17:36 , Tom Doyle

At the other end, Gundogan spins and shoots in the box but is blocked out really well.

Spurs then drive forward, but Lucas snatches at a shot from 25 yards - the wrong decision when he also had support.

17:35 , Tom Doyle

46 mins: Immediate opening for Spurs as Dele steals the ball off Fernandinho oin halfway.

He drives towards goal and tees up Hojbjerg, whose shot deflects towards Son, dut Dias blocks.

Kick-off!

17:33 , Tom Doyle

We are back underway - no changes for either side in north London.

Half-time | Spurs 0-0 Man City

17:18 , Tom Doyle

That’s the interval, and Spurs will be happy with how they grew into that half after City dominated the opening minutes.

17:13 , Tom Doyle

Another effort from Son from outside the box - he tries to beat Ederson with a dipping volley, but it flies over the bar.

Still, Spurs have really stepped things up.

Close for Son!

17:12 , Tom Doyle

Son whips an effort from the edge of the area which flies just wide of Ederson’s left-hand post.

The shot took a decent deflection off Cancelo, but the referee gives a goal kick - not great from the officials to miss that.

17:09 , Tom Doyle

36 mins: Interesting - Anthony Taylor calls captain Hugo Lloris out of his goal to talk to him after a foul from Tanganga.

The Spurs defender could have been booked as it’s his fourth foul, but it looks like Taylor is warning Lloris as skipper instead.

It’s an interesting concept, but if the captain is the keeper, it’s also wasting time.

Dan Kilpatrick at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

17:07 , Tom Doyle

Both sides are, ahem, missing a top centre-forward here. Son has actually slowed down a couple of Spurs counter attacks, while City are toothless.

Mahrez has just fired a half volley wide when you expected the net to bulge.

17:07 , Tom Doyle

Big chance for City as Mahrez meets a cross from the left, but slips and sends the ball wide.

That’s a howler.

17:03 , Tom Doyle

We’re half an hour in, and Spurs have settled well now. They’re looking to soak up the pressure before breaking at pace.

Son can’t find an angle to shoot from out wide on the left now - he’s just holding off for some reason at the moment, and Nuno will need his key forward today to be a bit more ruthless.

Dan Kilpatrick at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

16:56 , Tom Doyle

After initially looking likely to be another long 90 minutes of Spurs defending against City, the hosts have grown into the game and are now on top.

City aren’t anywhere near their slick best and Nuno’s side are surely sensing they can spring an upset.

Chance for Spurs!

16:56 , Tom Doyle

A let-off for City as a deep free-kick comes in and Ederson doesn’t get there.

The ball loops and falls kindly for Lucas, but Gundogan is well placed to block the goalbound shot.

16:54 , Tom Doyle

Good pressure from Spurs on corners, but the ball doesn’t quite fall kindly at the back post for Dele Alli.

The home crowd are sensing this could be a vital passage of play though given City have dominated possession so far.

16:50 , Tom Doyle

18 mins: Tanganga tries to escape from Sterling on halfway, and referee Anthony Taylor pulls the play back - the Spurs fans are pleased with that one.

That looks like it’s going to be a real battle on that flank.

16:43 , Tom Doyle

Mahrez wriggles away on the right and puts a low ball in, but Lloris is down to collect and hold well. More pressure from City.

16:42 , Tom Doyle

10 mins: Sterling drives inside from the left with confidence. Skipp makes a good challenge and wants a goal kick, but a corner is given.

Dan Kilpatrick at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

16:42 , Tom Doyle

It goes without saying but it really is spine-tingling to have supporters back.

City fans have fired the first shots, reminding the home support that “Harry Kane wants to be blue” and the visitors are on top on the pitch too, with Spurs looking nervy.

16:40 , Tom Doyle

Sky Sports are reporting that Harry Kane is in the stadium.

Cue the jokes about him being in the away end...

16:40 , Tom Doyle

Mendy gets caught on the left flank and Son looks to drive in towards goal - he has Ake to beat, but elects to turn around and play the safe option, and the opportunity goes begging.

Disappointing from Son there.

Another chance for City!

16:37 , Tom Doyle

City could have had two already as a loose ball falls for Cancelo in the Spurs penalty area - he takes a touch and volleys, but drags it wide with Lloris rooted to the spot!

With City come to regret those misses?

Chance for City!

16:36 , Tom Doyle

4 mins: Big, big let-off for Hugo Lloris as he comes for a cross from the left flank.

He’s never getting there, and misses it - but Fernandinho heads wide with the goal gaping!

Lloris breathes a sigh of relief...

16:35 , Tom Doyle

3 mins: Early danger from Grealish as he wins a free-kick right on the edge of the area.

Gundogan whips it at goal, and the Spurs wall flick it over the bar for a corner.

16:35 , Tom Doyle

Spurs may have be going through difficult times with a poor season and the speculation over Harry Kane’s future, but seeing this stadium full is a real sight.

It feels like the real beginning of a new era for Spurs; one which may require some recalibrating of goals, but one in which the fans will be along for the ride in a world-class stadium.

16:33 , Tom Doyle

We are underway in north London!

What a sight in north London...

16:22 , Tom Doyle

We are closing in on kick-off in north London now, and while Kane may be missing for Spurs, you get the sense that City could be there for the taking today.

Guardiola’s side are not up to full strength and also looked blunt in the Community Shield defeat to Leicester, so Spurs may just fancy their chances... but they’ll have to work hard for it.

So, Harry Kane is not involved today. Given he’s only had two training sessions since returning from holiday, Nuno has decided that he is not fit enough to even take a place on the bench and did not travel to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as uncertainty continues to surround his future.

Man City boss Pep Guardiola revealed last week that his club were interested in signing Kane, but Spurs have no intention of selling their star player and would need an offer of in excess of £150million to even get to the negotiating table.

Nuno told Sky Sports: “He is continuing his preparation, the delay, all these things. Harry needs to work, he worked today and he will keep on working until he is ready for the team.

“Players that have not had many sessions need more work with us. It’s a different case with Bryan (Gil) because he was at the Olympic Games, also Romero, but I think, for them it is important to be here to see the stadium, the hotel, the meeting, to see all the process we have, it is important.

“He worked in the morning, I don’t know what he is going to do (this afternoon).”

Kane joins Liverpool’s Jordan Henderson as the only non-injured player involved in the Euro 2020 final not to feature for their clubs this weekend.

Jack Grealish - making his full debut following his £100million move from Aston Villa - and Raheem Sterling started for City, while John Stones and Kyle Walker were on the bench.

‘Kane not in Spurs squad'

15:17 , Tom Doyle

According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, Harry Kane has not travelled with the squad having been deemed unfit after only returning on Friday.

Bad news for Spurs fans...

Spurs have arrived...

15:15 , Tom Doyle

Kick-off time and venue

15:15 , Tom Doyle

A quick reminder that the game is scheduled for a 4:30pm BST kick-off today, and will take place at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with a full crowd in attendance.

Score prediction

15:14 , Tom Doyle

Much-changed City evidently lacked firepower in the curtain-raiser against Leicester, while Guardiola has bemoaned having so many internationals missing during pre-season with a short time to prepare for the new campaign.

It remains to be seen if Kane will feature for Tottenham, but their results against Chelsea and Arsenal in pre-season proved they have other finishers capable of picking up the slack.

Now is probably a good time to face City, before they start getting into their unstoppable groove.

2-2 draw.

Early Man City team news

15:13 , Tom Doyle

City are without midfielders Kevin De Bruyne (ankle) and Phil Foden (foot) as the pair continue to recover from injuries suffered at Euro 2020.

Record signing Jack Grealish could make his Premier League debut after featuring as a substitute in the Community Shield last week.

Kyle Walker, John Stones, Raheem Sterling, Gabriel Jesus and Ederson are all back in contention after returning to training this week.

Man City provisional squad: Ederson, Steffen, Carson, Walker, Cancelo, Stones, Ake, Dias, Laporte, Mendy, Zinchenko, Fernandinho, Gunodgan, Rodri, Grealish, Sterling, Torres, Mahrez, Silva, Palmer, Doyle, Jesus.

Early Spurs team news

15:13 , Tom Doyle

Nuno faces a big call over Harry Kane. The striker only joined in group training on Friday following his late return from holiday as he tries to force through a move to Sunday’s opponents.

New signing Cristian Romero will be assessed after his injury while Japhet Tanganga is fit after coming off in the last pre-season friendly with an abductor issue.

Tottenham provisional squad: Lloris, Gollini, Tanganga, Doherty, Aurier, Romero, Sanchez, Dier, Rodon, Davies, Reguilon, Skipp, Hojbjerg, Sissoko, Lo Celso, Alli, Moura, Bergwijn, Gil, Son, Kane.
