Novak Djokovic wants a similar tennis farewell to Roger Federer.

The Swiss great played the final match of a glittering career at the Laver Cup last weekend with Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray all present at his swansong and Djokovic hopes to end his time in the sport in the same manner.

The Serb told reporters: "It was just a very touching, very emotional moment.

"Seeing his kids and his family, it got me emotional as well. I also must say I was thinking about how it would look for me when I say goodbye to tennis.

"There is definitely one thing that I will wish to have, other than, of course, my family and the close people in my life, I would love to have my biggest rivals and competitors there. Because it added something more special, added more importance to that moment."

Djokovic revealed that he considers Nadal to be his greatest rival as the pair vie to win the most Grand Slams of any male player.

The 21-time major champion - who trails Nadal by one Slam - said: "We played the most matches against each other of any other rivalry in the history of tennis.

"The rivalry is very special and keeps going. Hopefully, we'll get a chance to play against each other more times. Because it's exciting for us and also for tennis fans and sports fans around the world."

Djokovic's refusal to have the COVID-19 vaccine has impacted his attempts to make history as he had to miss both the Australian Open and US Open this year but he recently said that he had no regrets about missing out on Flushing Meadows.

He said: "No, I don’t have any regrets. I mean, I do feel sad that I wasn’t able to play, but that was the decision that I made. I knew what the consequences will be, so I accepted them. That’s it."
