A 5-year-old boy on Wednesday landed a giant white seabass by himself while being cheered – and undoubtedly envied – by much older anglers fishing beside him.

Benjamin Morrison, a.k.a. Lil’ Red, was fishing with his dad aboard the Island Spirit out of Ventura, Calif., and reeled the fish to the boat after a surprisingly short fight of 10 minutes.

At 42 pounds, the prized white seabass matched Ben’s weight and was several inches longer than the boy is tall.

The landing immediately proclaimed him “Angler of the Month,” and boasted on Facebook, “He hooked and reeled this big boy all on his own.”

Brittani van der Meulen, spokeswoman for Ventura Harbor Sportfishing, told For The Win Outdoors that Ben has a good teacher in his dad, Mike, who is part-owner of 22nd Street Sportfishing in San Pedro.

Mike and Ben traveled to Ventura after hearing that Island Spirit Capt. Cody Rogers had scored limits of white seabass for his charter on Tuesday.

Fishing was slower Wednesday, but “Ben was one of the lucky anglers who caught a white seabass,” van der Meulen said.

White seabass, members of the croaker family, are prized for their fighting ability and as table fare. The all-tackle world record – 83 pounds, 12 ounces, caught off San Felipe, Mexico – has stood since 1953.
