See the Stunning Stone Monuments of Petra
The “Rose City” is a honeycomb of hand-hewn caves, temples, and tombs carved from blushing pink sandstone in the high desert of Jordan some 2,000 years ago. Hidden by time and shifting sand, Petra tells of a lost civilization. Little is known about the Nabateans—a nomadic desert people whose kingdom rose up from these cliffs and peaks, and whose incredible wealth grew from the lucrative incense trade.

Explore a Ghost Town in Southern Italy
The abandoned hillside village of Roghudi Vecchio, in Italy’s Aspromonte mountains was founded in the eleventh century. And the roots of its former residents may extend to ancient times. This region, Calabria, is the toe at the tip of Italy's boot. And when the Greeks started colonizing the area in the eighth century BC, Calabria was a toehold. Over the centuries, southern Italy again received Hellenic immigrants, displaced from the eastern Mediterranean. Newcomers either revived a flagging Greek-speaking minority, or reintroduced a language that had died out locally. Incredibly, even today there are a few thousand Greek speakers in Calabria. One village where you might hear the local dialect of Greko, or Italian Greek, is Roghudi Nuovo—New Roghudi—part of a cluster of Ionian seacoast towns on the outskirts of the city of Reggio. Today’s Roghudi was founded by people from Old Roghudi—Roghudi Vecchio, when floods forced virtually everyone out.

How to get an upgrade at a hotel
I will ask anyone for an upgrade, whether it’s a better table at a restaurant or a first-class seat on a flight. Scoring a hotel upgrade, however, comes with its own set of difficulties. You can’t exactly assess what’s available or which rooms will open up during your stay.

Top Things to Do in Albuquerque, New Mexico
Join me in Albuquerque, New Mexico, a city that sits on Route 66. This area is known for the Sandia Mountains, Native American culture, and a thriving art scene. On this visit, I was also introduced to Flamenco, and as it turns out, Albuquerque is the epicenter for this style of dance. The spirit of Albuquerque can also be found at places like Hotel Chaco, a luxury property inspired by the state's Chaco Canyon. You will feel the inspiration of Chaco Canyon as soon as you walk through the hotel’s front doors. A short walk from the hotel will take you into Old Town Albuquerque, where it’s impossible to walk ten steps without seeing something crafted by a local artist or inspired by area tribes.

Archaeologists Uncover Secrets at Ancient World’s Largest Cathedral
For some tourists, the goal of travel is to stand in the place where historical events took place: to follow in the footsteps of Jesus; follow the trade and pilgrimage routes of the Mayans, or stand on the field at Gettysburg. It’s an attempt to reach across time and grab a hold of the past but, in most cases, we are speaking in generalities. The via dolorosa—the pilgrimage route that Jesus took to Calvary and his death—is slightly wrong. And...

The Best “Parkitecture” Hotels for Travelers Who Love the National Parks
Proving mother nature knows best, the national parks inspired their own brand of architecture. It’s called “parkitecture,” and while it emerged in the early 19th century, its tenants remain popular today and still influence how architects plan buildings near the national parks—and in natural landscapes in general. Several principles define the architectural style—horizontal lines should dominate and nearby buildings should be in harmony with one another. But the overarching rule governing this architectural style is that buildings should not attempt to visually upstage the natural beauty surrounding them. The 23 Best National Park Adventures As a national park enthusiast, you’ve probably come across some classic examples of parkitecture: Yellowstone’s Old Faithful Inn and its towering lobby built with local logs and stones or the Majestic Yosemite Hotel in Yosemite National Park, which was originally built in the 1920s to draw more wealthy visitors to the park. Here are seven more “parkitecture”-inspired hotels that are worth checking out if you love the national parks.
