Alaska Airlines is suspending change and cancellation fees due to the coronavirus; Other major airlines are also taking steps

ANCHORAGE (KTUU) - Alaska Airlines announced Thursday that until March 12th, 2020, it is suspending change and cancellation fees for new flight bookings, due to the coronavirus.

A quote from the airlines blog post reads, “We understand that information about the coronavirus is creating confusion and anxiety for some. Our first goal is to keep our guests safe, and offer peace of mind when it comes to flying with us,” said Andrew Harrison, executive vice president, and chief commercial officer. “So, through this period, if you need to change your plans after booking a flight, we’ll work with you on new arrangements and you won’t have to worry about any change or cancellation fees.”

If you book a flight before March 12 and then decide by that date to change or cancel your trip, you'll receive full travel credit to fly later.

The policy applies to all of their fares including the saver fares which usually aren't allowed to be changed or canceled.

Alaska Airlines is giving those who use this option a year to use the credit.

Delta

Delta is also responding to coronavirus concerns.

On its website, the airline says it's waiving change fees for those going to Shanghai and Beijing, China, Seoul, South Korea, and all locations in Italy.

For China and South Korea trips, you have until April 30 to make a change. For your Italy plans you have till March 15.

Delta also announced it suspended service between the U.S. and Shanghai and Beijing until April 30. It also reduced service to Seoul, South Korea.

American AirLines

American Airlines has issued travel alerts on its website for those traveling to, from, or through Italy, China, and South Korea.

In a list provided by the airlines, it says your change fee may be waived if you meet certain requirements. Also, you may have the option to change your trip, Delay your trip or cancel your trip all together and request a refund.

United

United is issuing travel waivers to areas affected by the novel coronavirus.

The airlines says travel waivers allow passengers to change to alternate flights without paying a change fee.

Some of the areas affected include Wuhan, China, Beijing, China, Hong Kong, Seoul, South Korea, and several locations in Italy.

The travel waivers may also allow you to get a refund or reschedule your trip.
