Boeing 737 MAX 7 Not Likely To Receive Certification In 2022

The acting head of the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Billy Nolan, has said that he does not expect the Boeing 737 MAX 7 to be certified before the end of the year. The delay stems from additional requirements that are soon to be imposed on aircraft manufacturers.

The upcoming deadline for Boeing, and other aircraft manufacturers, is December 27th, 2022. From that date onwards, all aircraft must have modern cockpit alerting systems, requiring FAA certification. This does not affect aircraft already in production, such as the Boeing 737 MAX 8, but without an extension to the deadline, the Boeing 737 MAX 7 and MAX 10 are likely to face considerable delays.

The requirement for the cockpit alerting system was brought in following the two fatal Boeing 737 MAX accidents involving Lion Air (2018) and Ethiopian Airlines (2019), which killed a total of 346 passengers.

Support for a deadline extension

Last month, the aircraft manufacturer was backed by Republican Senator Lindsey Graham in its bid to have the deadline extended to September 2024. United Airlines also supported the move. Congress has yet to give a verdict on the matter, but the statement from Nolan may encourage a response to be issued sooner rather than later.

Boeing chief executive has expressed his confidence in the extension being granted, and still expects the Boeing 737 MAX 7 to be certified in 2022 or 2023, and the Boeing 737 MAX 10 to begin flight testing by 2023, with a view to the aircraft entering into service by 2024.

Boeing 737 MAX 7 vs Boeing 737 MAX 10

The Boeing 737 MAX 7, seating 153-172 passengers, has been designed as a replacement for the Boeing 737-700. A total of 286 Boeing 737 MAX 7s have been ordered so far, with by far the largest order coming from Southwest Airlines, which is expecting to receive 234 of the variant. The two other airlines awaiting delivery of the Boeing 737 MAX 7 are Allegiant Air (30) and WestJet (22).

The larger Boeing 737 MAX 10 aircraft will seat up to 230 passengers in an all-economy configuration. A total of 920 Boeing 737 MAX 10s have so far been ordered – the largest orders have come from United Airlines (250), VietJet Air (106), and Delta Air Lines (100).

If certification of the Boeing 737 MAX 7 is pushed back into next year, it will mark yet another setback to the Boeing 737 MAX program, which has been plagued by problems in recent years. The almost two-year grounding following the two fatal accidents is believed to have led to losses totaling over $20 billion for Boeing.
