(Hartford, Conn. WTIC)-A measure designed to improve public safety for pedestrians and cyclists has passed the legislature's Finance Committee.

The measure  includes a pilot program that calls for municipalities to install traffic cameras in work zones, schools and hospitals. Ten municipalities would be selected by the Department of  Transportation and Office of Policy and Management.

Under the pilot program, the Department of Transportation could install speed cameras on certain highway maintenance work zones. That could

draw opposition from civil libertarians.

But Committee Chair John Fonfara says that aspect of the bill will help aid the work of police officers.

The bill would cite a driver for opening a door that impedes a cyclist, and increased penalties for distracted driving.

The measure passed with bi-partisan support.
