Southwest Airlines announced Monday its expansion of its air service options from Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport.

According to a news release, Southwest will increase its service between Amarillo and Hobby International Airport in Houston to six days a week starting April 14, 2020. The airline originally had Sunday-only service between the two cities but in April, will expand that to Sunday through Friday.

"This is phenomenal news for Amarillo and for Southwest Airlines," Amarillo Mayor Ginger Nelson said in the release. "Our city is committed to expanding travel options for Panhandle businesses, and Southwest Airlines is committed to listening to customers and meeting customer needs. This new service is a direct result of those commitments."

Julian Gelvez Hinestroza, the manager of network planning at Southwest Airlines, said the expanded flight option is due to listening to travelers in the Panhandle and better understanding their needs.

"Southwest is committed to connecting people to what's important in their lives and building on our decades-long partnership with the city of Amarillo," he said in the release.

Southwest will offer up to six departures a day including four nonstop flights to Dallas, one to Las Vegas and one to Houston. This will now link Amarillo to nearly 60 markets across the United States, the Caribbean and Mexico, the release states.
