American Airlines flight out of Charlotte faces issue for second straight day

An American Airlines flight that was headed for Rome returned to Charlotte Douglas International Airport Monday night after experiencing mechanical issues. American Airlines said the flight landed safely at Charlotte.  

Then Tuesday, the flight was reported to have issues again. American Airlines confirmed the flight is safely on the ground at JFK and everyone is off the plane after a possible mechanical issue.

A spokesperson with American Airlines provided WCNC Charlotte with the following statement on Monday: 

On May 30, American Airlines flight 720 with service from Charlotte (CLT) to Rome (FCO), returned to CLT due to a possible mechanical issue. The flight landed safely at CLT and taxied to the gate under its own power. Our maintenance team is currently inspecting the aircraft. We never want to disrupt our customers’ travel plans, and we are sorry for the trouble this caused.

A spokesperson provided WCNC Charlotte with the following statement on Tuesday: 

American Airlines flight 720 with service from Charlotte (CLT) to Rome (FCO), diverted to John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) due to a possible mechanical issue. The flight landed safely without issue and taxied to the gate under its own power.  

American’s maintenance team is evaluating the aircraft and our customers are expected to board an alternate aircraft shortly. We never want to disrupt our customers’ travel plans, and we are deeply sorry for the trouble this has caused. 

American Airlines said the flight was not operated on the same aircraft. According to FlightAware, both flights were on Boeing 777-200 planes.

The passengers boarded a new plane Tuesday night to finally head to Rome.
