Plans were first laid for the Titanic (and her near-identical sister ships the Olympic and Britannic) in 1907 by the White Star Line. Other companies, including Cunard, already had popular passenger ships such as the RMS Lusitania and the RMS Mauretania, and the Titanic was designed to compete with these stars of the sea.
