"BREAKDOWN: The Response" (Part II)

KSLA News 12’s original documentary "BREAKDOWN: The Frontline Response to the Mental Health Crisis” explored how Shreveport police officers and firefighters respond to psychiatric emergencies on a daily basis and how sometimes those calls for help turn tragic because the first responders lack the training to deal with the mentally ill. The Shreveport police and fire departments launched a first-of-its-kind program in Louisiana to train all of the city’s first responders in crisis intervention. Now our three-part follow-up report, "BREAKDOWN: The Response," explores how overwhelming public support arose after that documentary aired and how department chiefs then decided to expand the program and develop a dedicated mental health unit that soon may get dispatched to psychiatric emergencies throughout the city.
