Luna Park was one of many that sprung up here, opening in 1903, and cementing its status as the country’s premier amusement resort. Dreamland opened a year later and in 1916, Nathan Handwerker started selling hot dogs from a stand which went on to become Nathan's Famous hot dog chain. The iconic boardwalk was built in the 1920s.
