A longtime Sioux Falls attraction has opened its doors on its newest expansion this week.

Thunder Road, at 201 N. Kiwanis Ave., has been in Sioux Falls for nearly 25 years, gradually adding on attractions, such as laser tag and balloon wars, through the years.

Its latest addition to the amusement park is a 29,000 square foot indoor space, including a restaurant, bowling, ax throwing and more. The attractions are available in the summer and winter months, said general manager Ryan Friez.

The idea of an expansion started nearly three years ago. Features inside the park include hyper bowling, which combines physical bowling with virtual games; bumper cars; mini bowling; more than 45 arcade games; a two-story laser tag course; ax throwing and a 7-D theater, which has extra features, such as spraying water and other sensory technologies, to make the films come alive.

Both the theater and hyper bowling are emerging technologies in the entertainment industry, and Sioux Falls is one of the first markets to test them out, Friez said.

While it seems like a child's dream, the space is attractive to kids at heart too, Friez said.

"It's built for families and it plays awesome for adults," he said. "We've had several adult birthday parties."

A restaurant featuring American-style comfort food and offering beer is also a standout piece of the addition.

The space can host more than 100 people with birthday parties and other events, but Thunder Road is taking precautions with COVID-19.

Employees are required to wear masks, and customers are encouraged to wear masks. There is enhanced cleaning throughout the space.

"We really felt is was something that would benefit our summer business, and it was something Sioux Falls had a real need for," Friez said. "We have some activities to do in the winter, but we felt having something of this magnitude in this city would be a niche and that could be filled."
