The Piney Woods School, which is for eighth to 12th graders, was founded in 1909.

"Its an honor to be able to say I go to school where Laurence C. Jones made the school," said student Elise Bridges.

The campus is full of history.

"This is the original site where, actually, school started on a log," Dean of Student Life Sekufele Lewanika said. "This is actually the stump of the tree that was struck by lightning, but someone came up with a genius idea to plant another tree inside and it still exists."

In addition to the museum with numerous artifacts, the first school house is also on campus. There's even a cemetery where the founder, teachers and other influential people are buried.

"They all came here to volunteer because they saw a need, and of course historically, this was needed," Lewanika said. "In this area, most of us who look like us were not able to come to school.

Faculty members said now every student receives a scholarship based on their family income.

There are international students and staff from all over the world, including parts of Africa.

The school also has a partnership with Facebook. The company donated 40 virtual reality Oculus Quest devices to the school.

"It's a neat headset that we have," instructor Zachary Singletary said. "We can access different museums and places in the United States that we can walk through and experience without being there, and then there's games out of it where you can play academic games."

Faculty say they focus on experimental learning at the school, so the whole campus is the classroom.

Some founders, teachers and other influential people are buried on campus.
